  • 2010 Canadian Post-Secondary Teams: news

The 2010 Canadian Post-Secondary Team Championships are being hosted this weekend by the University of Toronto at the beautiful Hart House facility. The organizing committee has done an excellent job, and we have set a new record for the event with 19 teams participating!!!!! This breaks the previous record of 17, set at Queen's last year. Congratulations to Chief Organizer Alex Ferreira and his team for their energetic efforts!!!! Bryan Lamb is directing, with his normal professional manner, and play has been proceeding smoothly with no disputes to date in what has traditionally been a friendly but competitive event. Thanks to Bryan!!!! I'm assisting the event with various minor tasks (serving on the Appeals Committee, posting games on chess5.com, updating results here, etc).

Here are some results and standings after round 3; round 4 has just gotten underway, with the final round 5 set for this afternoon. Toronto A leads the championship group with a perfect 3/3 points, trailed closely by Waterloo A with 2.5. Those two teams are playing each other now, with Toronto having White on odd-numbered boards. Toronto's top player FM Bindi Cheng has only played round one to date, and is not playing this round either, which changes the competitive equation.

In the reserve section, Waterloo B, Queen's B, and Western A are tied with 2.5/3 points. In this round, Waterloo B is meeting Western A, with Queen's B facing Guelph B (2 points).

    Championship section crosstable to date:

    1. Waterloo A (2160) B6+ W7+ W3= B2
    2. Toronto A (2066) W4+ B3+ W6+ W1
    3. Ottawa A (2020) W8+ W2- B1= B5
    4. Queen's A (1915) B2- W8= B7+ B6
    5. Carleton A (1912) B7- W6- B8+ W3
    6. Guelph A (1907) W1- B5+ B2- W4
    7. Toronto C (1836) W5+ B1- W4- B8
    8. Toronto B (1831) B3- B4= W5- W7

Strength in the top group is down significantly from last year; defending champion Western's top two players, IM Raja Panjwani and IM Jonathan Tayar, elected not to take part. Dalhousie, which usually has a strong team, cancelled at the last minute; and there are no Montreal teams this year. Also, it had been hoped that York would enter; they could have fielded GM Mark Bluvshtein and IM Leonid Gerzhoy on their top two boards. David Peng chose not to compete for U of T. Masters who are competing include Cheng, FM Christian Stevens (Guelph), NM Mihnea Voloaca (Ottawa), NM Kyle Morrison (Waterloo), and NM Alex Torres (Carleton); all are on board one for their respective schools.

I will be posting some of the interesting games from this event on the site chess5.com throughout the day.

Also, the CPSCA planning meeting was held yesterday, and featured much interesting and lively discusssion among the organizers, the team captains, the host site event coordinator, and various other people. I understand that Alex Ferreira plans to post items from discussion on this site, once the event is complete. As of now, a final decision has not been made on the host for next year.

Larry Bevand from CMA is visiting the event today. Thanks Larry! The Toronto Star is planning to visit today and to report on the tournament, so watch that fine newspaper for an article in the coming days.

    Cheers,
    Frank Dixon

For obvious reasons this event should be renamed to 2010 Ontario Post-Secondary Teams

It's been a while but I think we got it all together now :)
The CPSCC was definitely a different type of tournament, very social and enjoyable.
Some quality chess being played as well. Many players returned after a long absence, some guys played in their first tournament.

            Championship:

Gold - Toronto A: Bindi Cheng, Geordie Derraugh, David Krupka, Haizhou Xu, Alex Ferreira, Digeng Du
Silver - Ottawa A: Minhea Voloaca, Jason Riordon, Kar-Fai Gee, Danail Donev
Bronze - Waterloo A: Kyle Morrison, Kevin Chung, Iulia Lacau-Rodean, Jeff Willms

            Best board 1: Minhea Voloaca with a performance of 2494 - Ottawa A (5/5)
            Board 2: Kevin Chung - Waterloo A (5/5)
            Board 3: Haizhou Xu - Toronto A (5/5)
            Board 4: Jeff Willms - Waterloo A (4/5)

The competitive and cheerful team of Ottawa, taking Silver in the Championship Section.

            Reserves:

Gold - Waterloo B: Alfonso Cheng, James Scott, Eric Cheung, Wenzhangzhi Guo
Silver - Guelph B: Kevin Fernandes, Paul Stephens, Christopher Risi, Romeo Agda
Bronze - Toronto D: William George, Kevin Chen, Jacob Stein, Alex Safir, Colin Cuttress

            Board 1: Steele Roddick - Western A (4/5)
            Board 2: Paul Stephens - Guelph B (4/5)
            Board 3: Eric Cheung - Waterloo B (4.5/5)
            Board 4: Wenzhangzhi Guo - Waterloo B (5/5)

87 players participated, forming 19 teams from 8 different schools. 19 teams is a record from 17 that played the previous year, the # of players also being a high. Schools participating last year were 10. It seems that those who participate enjoy it enough to return and bring more players with them, but it's a challenge to initiate new schools.

Canada is a big country and traveling is expensive. We were in contact with several out-of-Ontario schools but none were able to join us. By moving it around, even if it has only been in the Toronto-Montreal corridor lately, we hope new Universities will join and bring in a bid to take the tournament even farther.

From the 87 players who participated, 56 had expired CFC memberships. 14 are completely new to the CFC, even if a few had ratings from other federations. 36 of these 56 opted to buy the $20 tournament membership instead of getting the $43 full-year deal. Something to think about...

It seems everyone overall had an amazing time, both at the board and away from it. The skittles room was full of energy in between games. From people playing the piano, to analyzes between total strangers, a lunch room, when not at the tournament hall, it was the place to be. On Sunday we also had the treat to have GM Bator Sambuev join us for game analyses.

The pub night on Saturday was a huge success as some 37 people came out for it. Management at the 'Duke of York' even had to move us around on a couple of occasions since we had so many people (once for most of us, twice for those of us who stayed the 5 hours). I am ashamed to say that UT was grossly under-represented at this outing with only three of us, the disadvantage of being the home team :D --- Weather was quite agreeable taking into account we're in January.

Main organizer of this event and the one who deserves recognition for a ton of behind-the-scenes work is Alexander Safir! With the help of Travis Li, Leon Perelman and Rob Roller, this was truly a memorable event. I did surprisingly little leading up to the event :) even if I looked busy on-site. A big thanks as always to Bryan Lamb. Our staff advisor Day Milman made sure we were able to jump through all the hoops. We'd also like to thank Erik Malmsten for many of the photos, and Frank Dixon for making himself available to help on-site and providing some live news as well as games on chess5. I will post any additional games I have in due time.

The CPSCC, as well as the extra games played on-site involving some participants with byes as well as members of the community, should be rated this Wednesday coming up.

A Nice Chess Weekend for Some Community Members

Alex Ferreira: " The CPSCC, as well as the extra games played on-site involving some participants with byes as well as members of the community, should be rated this Wednesday coming up. "

My thanks to Organizer Alex and TD Bryan, who came up with the unique idea of inviting the community to come and play rated games against university team members sitting out a round, or against each other. A small group of community members came out, and some good games were played ( Bryan Lamb even played one of the games ). I was pleased to get to play Queen's coach Frank Dixon, community members Michael Song and Jackie Peng, and university team member, Sina Makaremi. It made for a nice weekend of socializing a bit with a number of university team members I knew, and playing tournament condition games against good opponents. Thanks again for an enjoyable chess weekend. Hope it becomes a regular feature of the CPSCC.
