  • Bohatirchuk's Red Propaganda Chess

Voronkov wrote an article (in Russian) about the history of Bohatirchuk's Red Propaganda Chess. It has a lot of photos of original articles in English.

"Bohatirchuk" is a spelling in his signature of the passport (or ID).

The document that we placed in our article Red Propaganda Chess (Part I) is not a passport. It is page 1 (out of 12) from Cerificate of Identity. Dr. Bohatirchuk received Canadian passport in 1954 after receiving his Certificate of Citizenship.
Part II of our article will be devoted to Dr. Bohatirchuk's discussion with GM Pachman ("Colonel Pachman" as he was called for his connections with Secret Service of then communist Czechoslovakia). Discussion lasted from 1950 till 1979 when Pachman publicly admitted that he was completely wrong. A great moral victory of Dr. Bohatirchuk over Pachman and Wade with the help from Montgomery Major and R.N. Coles!

The same author, Sergey Voronkov, returned to this topic as part of his extensive exposé on widespread collusion between Soviet chess players in international tournaments.

Here's a - quite readable - automatic English translation made by Google from the Russian original.

The article covers a period starting in 1933 and quotes admissions allegedly made by such players as Flohr, Botvinnik and Bronstein in their sunset years. It makes for a fascinating read and features great photos and editorial cartoons.

Red Propaganda Chess is prominently mentioned and extensively cited. There is also a reference to Dr. Bohatirchuk's 1953 article Memoirs of the Former Soviet Chess Master published in the Ukrainian Canadian monthly called The Federalist Democrat. Mr. Voronkov's article quotes Dr. Bohatirchuk's account of his 1936 interrogation at the Ukrainian NKVD (KGB) that was furious about his win against Botvinnik in an international tournament. There is a facsimile of a page from that 1953 article but I was unable to find the whole article online.

        Bohatirchuk’s Red Propaganda Chess

The background on all this is in an excellent article by Edward Winter in Chess Notes (2003) at:

        http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/extra/pachman.html

It is entitled Pachman, Bohatirchuk and Politics.

What an eye-opener! Thank you Wayne.

Knowing the post-1968 views and fate of Ludek Pachman, I couldn't have imagined how vicious and patently wrong he was in 1949-50, resorting to ad hominem attacks on Dr. Bohatirchuk in order to defend the official "party line". I find Mr. Pachman's mud-slinging at the RLA especially sad. A person of his background (arrested by Gestapo in Bohemia) would certainly know and appreciate that it was the RLA that liberated Prague from the Nazis in May 1945.

Aha! Thank you Egis, this chesspro site seems to be a veritable gold mine for artifacts.

Reading his 25th chess anniversary memories, one gets certain nostalgia for naiveté of the "gold old days" :) -
"In 1926 I took part in an international torunament in Moscow. It was not easy to play in a tournament where knowledge of openings accounted for 75% of success."
