General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Congratulations to the OCA! Somewhere they might say "back to basics", or "do what you're good at". Elsewhere they might say something like: looch-she PO-zdna, chem nyi-kag-DA ("better late than never", in a language often overheard at chess tournaments).
Is not that the weekend of the Octoberfest tourney in Kitchener?
If it is then the OCA has not added a lost tournament but deleted a regular tournament. If that is chess progress then I better change my socks to the ones in the hamper as it is this change that stinks.
I thought Chris Mallaon would be a breath of fresh air but an air wick would change that situation. If the OCA wnats support then create more tournaments ,do not decrease them.

Upgrading is not the problem. Reducing the number of tournaments is the problem.
Having less tournaments reduces revenue for both the CFC and the OCA via memberships and rating fess. This is why not creting an Ontario Open as an extra tournament is the problem. Hope you did not miss this one as three strikes could put you out of the game.

John, I understand your concern, but I don't know if it's fair to bash Chris for this mess-up from the previous organization. All the leagues/regions go into full swing in the fall, so it must have been tough to try and add an event. I believe that what the OCA has come up is palatable(sp?) ... Note that you can count on the 2009 Ontario Open being on the traditional Victoria Day weekend, as we're already planning for it in Ottawa! :)
Hi Chris: Why is the Ontario Open within one week of the Chessca Open?
Both tourneys serve the same pool of players. I hope it does'nt mean
poor attendance for both.
The Ontario Open is "merging" with the Oktoberfest Open to be the Oktoberfest Ontario Open (ooo!). If anything you could ask why the Chessca Open was scheduled so closely to the already existing Kitchener tournament. Luckily Hal is out of the country or the Guelph event would be the weekend after Chessca!
This is in response to the comment that the Chessca Open tournament being scheduled within one week apart the Ontario Open. We very much regret the fact that the tournament falls in the same month of many major tournaments in Ontario, notably the Ontario Open. This would presumably affect not only tournament turnout but also the overall success of both tournaments. This is the negative effect which we have tried avoiding while planning for the Chessca Open in the previous year.
In early May this year, we have written an email to the CFC/a local organiser of most of the major/common tournaments in Guelph/KW region, asking for the dates of the tournaments scheduled to be held later this year. The purpose of the email was to avoid any overlappings of tournaments. However, despite our effort, our emails were never replied. In addition, since we have not heard of any news of potential major tournaments coming up by August 1, we decided to go ahead and promote the Chessca Open.
Since the tournament contract has been signed with the venue operator, and announcements have been sent out, retracting the tournament at this point would not be feasible. In the future, we will ensure a greater level of communication among local organisers, caution, and efforts to be taken to avoid this similar situation.
All being said and done, we hope that both tournaments will garner support from chess players alike. We are glad to see existing and new organisers stepping up to serve the chess community. As an organiser, I believe I am not alone when I say that the intention of any organiser is mainly to serve and help propel the game to a higher level.
We wish the organiser of the Ontario Open great success, and our sincere apologies to any inconvenience that this may have caused.
I still don't see this as a problem. I think (long-term dream plan) it'd be cool to have a tournament virtually every weekend somewhere in Ontario. And enough players to fill them all, while we're at it :)
Thanks for the comments Mei. It does illustrate a "problem" we have in the SWOCL area (South Western Ontario Chess League), so many wonderful chess organizers and tournaments. There are a few times during the year that you literally (with some travel) can play every weekend. This is a "problem" that players in other regions of Canada would love to have.
Mei's Chessca tournament last year was an outstanding success.
Kitchener's Oktoberfest tournament in a perennial favourite.
Mei, don't sweat it. There are some of us who will probably play both tournaments. As both Bob and Chris have pointed out, sometimes SWOCL does have an embarrasment of riches when it comes to tournaments. IIRC the Brantford Open used to be on the last week of October and London had theirs in mid/late November.

Unfortunately, you had NOT contacted anyone at the KW chess club, including me.
The KW club is most certainly an organizer of MOST of the tournaments in Kitchener/Waterloo.
I sincerely wish you HAD contacted at least me.
Also, the Oktoberfest Open has been held for MANY years now. Anyone attending tournaments in this area would be able to tell you this.
