Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

Chess Clubs in Toronto and GTCL area or across Canada.
I have to support the chess community in Niagara Falls this weekend.
I have Upset Prizes and a special Prize this year to donate to the Niagara Falls Open. Not to mention that I'll be assisting John Erickson with running the tournament.
Oh I forgot I'm not supposed to promote or foster chess if I live in the GTCL
3. ANY tournament run in the GTCL and has been accepted by the GTCL re through bid system should have GTCL support. I've yet to see GTCL support any. We even had the Toronto Open last Easter Weekend. Is Toronto not in the GTCL??? (Guess not)
Thanks for your reply, John. Glad to hear of your support of Niagara Falls and the Toronto Open. If everybody at an event helped with set-up and take-down, there would likely be more people volunteering to organize events. Please continue to promote and foster chess in the GTC, as far as I know the GTCL does nothing to stop you and others from setting up chess displays at community fairs, shoppping malls, etc.
How could the GTCL have supported the Toronto Open better? We accepted their bid and advertised their event. The stars of Toronto chess organizing have not been the GTCL Executive but the Hart House CC, Chess in the Libraries, Scarbourgh CC, Willowdale CC and Mississauga CC. I hope they all continue their excellent volunteer work.

How could they have supported the Toronto Open a big Question and here is a little answer. SHOW UP> you did so did Illa.
There was no GTCL info on tables no website info, no GTCL logos no info about Chess in Libraries there were lots of juniors there that could have jumped on the flyers.There was nothing GTCL related. I think if the GTCL wanted to be noticed as an organization would you not think that it should have had something on tables at the Toronto Open GTCL's Biggest City? I think the GTCL flounders too much and expects Organizers and TD's to do their legwork and then have their Big AGM and say look we did great. Sorry you did S..t.
Does this mean that if I run a PEEL tournament why do I need GTCL support I can advertise and run tournaments anytime I please.
Really support means help it does not mean advertise. The organizers do that on their own. Oh maybe I should say that all my invitationals are all GTCL sanctioned and get on my knees and beg them to let me run a tourney.
If I waited for the GTCL I'd probably need a wheel chair, I'd be so old.
Another question
the SWOCL events collect a fee to go towards their Grand Prix.
I don't see GTCL grand Prix any more. What happened have they lost their volunteer to do a spread sheet?
I'll support any organization who fosters and promotes chess. The GTCL has not shown me diddle squat.
In fact the PEEL CHESS CLUB is strongly considering joining SWOCL and supporting their organization where chess is not only Fostered and supported but it is also far more friendly and they have an Executive who believes that the chess player is more important than how many are coming for coffee.

Thanks very much for telling us how to be much better at networking at tournaments and more supportive. I remember in the 1970s the (G)TCL freely distributed a list of chess clubs ( 8.5 x 14 paper, both sides). But info such as the calendar of events has switched to the website only. It would be good to have a paper copy to distribute to clubs.
I think the Grand Prix was discontinued because a) complaints about taking money out of the prize fund, away from class prizes, b) lack of organizers of weekend tournaments (until Hart House revived them) (including Labour Day organizer withdrawing from the Grand Prix) and c) it wasn't increasing attendance.
I also should have mentioned other stars of Toronto chess have been the chess teachers including CMA, Ted Winick's CIC, Oriole CC, and Roman Pelts. Not all chess activity has to be CFC-rated.
