    Re: Olympiad selection lists

The women's situation is very disappointing and is a result of being badly managed over the last couple of Olympiads. You can tell that many people involved are hesitant to get reinvolved at this point.

By now, with longer term focus, this team could have been very strong. Instead, they are rebuilding again. Many of these players have interest in chess but there just isn't enough positive stuff going on to get them interested again in competing.

With the new rules you need 5 strong players. This was very possible if several people involved had embraced this idea and worked towards it, putting individual goals secondary except when appropriate. I hope for the sake of any of the new players that a new approach is taken working towards strong results in 2-4 years.

I wonder if Lasker would have said as much about the young Capablanca or Reschevsky about the young Fischer? Boring and annoying?! Not that I am comparing the young Canadian masters with Capablance or Fischer but then I'm not comparing you with Lasker or Reschevsky :D:):D

So you are going to use laziness as your excuse? The rules say that games count if they are played more than 180 days before the Olympiad. That means all games played through Monday, March 22 count. You should use the March 24 rating list, and eliminate games from March 23 & 24 by hand.

        Hi David,

I don't have a clue who is right by the rules.

What I do know is that Ilia has been giving constant updates on this matter for a long time now...something we have not seen for many a year!

Let's be positive here...and raise the necessary funds so that our top players can take part!

Thanks to Ilia for his hard work and thanks to David for all the awesome contributions he has made over these many years!

Clear up the rule thing without getting nasty please :).

I am sure all those involved were working in good faith!

Let's all row in the same direction.

        Sincerely,

        Larry

The womens team finished 65 on tie break out of 114 teams. Just behind El Salvador. That's the reality and "coulda, woulda, shoulda" don't matter squat.

It doesn't matter much how strong the players are. What matters is how they play when the matches start. For an example of this we can use women's curling. We have now, in a short period of time, watched TWO womens teams choke. One in the Olympics and one in the world Championship. The game against Scotland last night was painful to watch and mercifully ended after only 8 ends. Time for Canadian Curling to rebuild.

Getting back to chess, probably there should only be the national team this year.

There has been NO statement a team will be sent unless sponsors show up. A lot of time and preparation goes into getting ready for an Olympiad, or it should, and people likely don't want to do the work unless they know they will be going.

Probably the top teams have good federations which have already made a decision they will send teams.

There is two ways to do it.
          1. Decide you will definately send teams and then pick the teams which have a chance of success and prepare them.
          2. Pick teams and decide later if there will be enough money to send them.

FIDE changed the rules so now there can only be 5 players on a team. Canada should change the rules and have a selection committee pick the 4 players they think have the best chance of winning. These blended ratings and are not providing results. Of course, the Canadian Champion would qualify.
