Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links

12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I was in a bookstore in Montreal on this glorious weekend...I checked out the games section at a Renaud Bray (kinda like a Chapters-French style :)...there was very little...2 books on Poker, 2 on bridge...none on chess...I would appreciate knowing how well your local bookstore is stalking chess titles.

Chapters is stocking the usual rubbish and not much of it...

Both Chapters and Indigo in Montreal have shrunk their chess section. It seems like there were more books on poker than on chess.
In fact, their book section is shrinking in general. There seemed to be far more gimmicky knick-knacks than books. Everything is ruled by profit margins. If you go to HMV, you can see a similar trend where DVDs and Blu-ray are taking over from the music portion.
I was looking to pick up a few Ken Bruen books on Sunday. I ended up finding more used ones at Cheap Thrills than new titiles. Thank goodness for used book stores. :)
World's Biggest Bookstore in Toronto used to have a not bad section of chess books, some Dover titles etc. but not last time I looked, actually the whole of WBB is not what it used to be.
Most other bookstores are poor, that includes McMaster U, Toronto U, Coles in the malls. Even BMV is pretty poor in Toronto.
Most will have some poker & bridge, and more poker and bridge than chess. A lot of crossword collections.
Indigo in Tecumseh had about 5 chess books today.
Chapters at the Devonshire Mall in Windsor had about 15 or so titles. Their stock has shrunk a bit to a bit less than one shelf. Most of them were decent books.
The Chapters in London had only a few chess books back on the 27th of March.
The World's Greatest Bookstore claimed to have some but I wasn't able to find them in about 5 minutes that I spent there on Saturday. (I didn't look that hard since I had already filled up at the Toronto store of Strategy and Games.) The used book store next door said that they had some but there weren't any chess books that I could find.
Juniper Books on Ottawa Street in Windsor had a decent collection of chess books at one point last year. I put a big dent in their collection.

Here in the U.S., the two big chains are Borders and Barnes & Noble. I've been to both in the past few weeks, and each has a Games section which I have to visit every time I'm there.
Poker definitely takes up the bulk of this section, but chess hasn't completely disappeared. Probably a ratio of anywhere from 5 to 1 to 10 to 1, poker to chess books.

The computer listed lots of titles. I asked one of the people working there where the chess books were and they directed me to an area where I didn't see any chess books. They may have been somewhere else but I was hungry and decided to look for a place to eat rather than spend too much more time looking for chess books which I probably wouldn't buy because I already have most of the ones that Indigo/Chapters/WBB sell. Occasionally you can find a bargain book on chess but lately it has always been books that I already own.
Here in Vancouver most of the local Chapters outlets stock a few recent titles from Gambit, Everyman, Batsford, and (occasionally) Olms. But it's clear they don't understand the market very well. If they sell a few copies of a particular title, they will order more of the same title instead of looking at the publisher's catalogue and figuring out that it might be good to stock a few other titles. One result is that we see Dangerous Weapons: Flank Openings (there's an oxymoron!) all the time.
I would say Newmarket (ON) Chapters has enough chess books (10-15 pcs) for a general audience - Kasparov, Fischer, MCO, etc., to make a gift to a novice chess player. For the advance one, the gift card is better :) I really like that they have Chess magazine, which I browse or buy from time to time.
As Neil Sullivan writes, it is really good to have used bookstores around (GTA). (Chess for the Beginner was found in one of them for $1.5 :) In one Toronto, I have seen old Informants, etc. It is pity that I'm not good with a descriptive notation, as much more old books available with this notation.
Chapters at Yonge &Eglinton is pretty good-about 20.In Florida in March I was at Barnes & Noble in West Palm Beach-they had a good collection 20-30 chess books and some I had never seen!!!!
My local Book store in Toronto has hundreds-Strategy Games on Mt. Pleasant.
If you are reading this Larry-I was in Ft. Lauderdale and many other venues in South Florida down to Key West and my conclusion is this: book stores are very hard to find,hence finding Chess literature is a real hunt!But ,at some Hotels/Resorts,I found some great wooden chess sets in the Lobby,lawns etc.and a couple of giant sets on patios in use,that was nice!
