  • Ontario Girls' Chess Championship 2010

Can you please forward this to the chess girls, coaches, tournament and club organizers....?

I would like to invite your girls to participate in our 8th Ontario Girls’ Chess Championships held on May 22, 2010. This year, the event will be at Marshall McLuhan Catholic School in Toronto .

In the past seven years, we have girls ranged from top players of the school grade to beginners coming from different cities of Ontario .

It is a grade-by-grade chess tournament open to all girls in Ontario . The purpose of this annual girls’ only tournament is to encourage more girls to play chess. Besides the competition, we provide a festival setting with many other activities for the girls to enjoy a day of chess and fun. I hope you would encourage the girls in your school or your club to join us.

    Please find details at http://www.freewebs.com/ogcc

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at corinna.wan@utoronto.ca

    Thank you!

    Hi Larry,

How can I make the OGCC known to more girls, or chess clubs, teachers, and tournament organizers?

If you have emailed everyone, as I suspect (you have emailed me three times), then that's all I can think of. Your event is now advertised on the Windsor website at www.windsorchess.ca

What is your average attendance, and what number are you looking for?

Corinna has been a big supporter of the Chess'n Math Association over many years. She has built a great event (from nothing) over the years. This event is CMA rated...because that is what she wants to do...

organizers decide...not players...that is the reality...

Are you listening (or do you care?) in Northern Ontario and Vancouver ...

            (shush Larry)

I saw Corinna yesterday at the Ontario Chess Challenge.

We discussed another project that I would love to see her take on...obviously she has a lot on her plate...and what I admire and respect about Corinna is that she devotes 200% to whatever project she decides to promote!

People like Corinna are a major asset to chess in Canada!

Thanks for being an important part of the chess scene in Canada, Corinna!

Hope to see you in Montreal for our 25th anniversary celebration this summer!

Re: Ontario Girls' Chess Championship 2010

I will be sure to encourage the girls at the Mississauga Junior club to enter this tournament. I often use some TD discretion to pair the girls together, as some appear more comfortable playing other girls. So a girls only tournament should be popular.

Corinna, good luck and keep up the excellent work! :)

Several Windsor girls play in the OGCC each year, and I always advertise the event on my website. I'm just askin', what kind of attendance would Corinna like??

                Just askin'

                  Hi John,

I did email you three times? May be I should organize my mailing lists.
I got the email addresses randomly by searching here at chesstalk and other websites like google search. I guess, your website is doing the job, that's why I found you three times!
Thanks for posting the OGCC information.
As for the number you asked: its the same every year - all the chess girls in Ontario!

                    Thank you Bob.

Yes, there are many girls feel comfortable playing to girls only. I hope the OGCC is a start for some of the girls. They will eventually play in other tournaments, and of course, come back to the OGCC every year.

                      Hi Larry,

                      Thanks for your nice words.

I believe that junior tournaments, especially shorter games, have to be CMA rated, so that the juniors can see their rankings and relative strength among all the juniors.

I support CMA because CMA is really working hard on scholastic chess. There are so many people like you, Christian and YVES working for CMA with their hearts.

                        Hi Corinna,

I miss Yves very much...and think of him daily...you are right...his heart was in the right place. There will never be another Yves. We have named the Tournament Room at our headquarters in Montreal after him...so that time will not allow us to forget such a great individual!

We are lucky at Chess'n Math to have a large number of people who are devoted to the mission of bringing the game of chess to Canadian youngsters. From the 100 or so chess teachers helping over 10,000 Canadian youngsters weekly, to the office folks who take care of the administrative end of things...to the great volunteers such as yourself who make all the difference!

I am very impressed with the event you have built from scratch and I share in your dream of a National event. I know Quebec holds a girls championship every year...maybe we can start with something between the two provinces...as we have done with the team tournament....perhaps even run both events concurrently in June...in Kingston....with the help of another important contributor...Frank Dixon.

                        Larry

The OGCC is one of my favourite tournaments to follow each year. Corinna does a good job running it, and it's such a great inspiration for the young girls that participate.
