Re: Ontario Girls' Chess Championship 2010

The 8th annual Ontario Girls' Chess Championships, held this past Saturday of the Victoria Day weekend, was another great success. A record 128 girls, both returning and new, showed up eager to play. As the day went on, this enthusiasm grew, resulting in many good games and close matches. As always, participants received medals and participation awards, pizza lunch and snacks, and beautiful souvenir T-shirts designed by Kathy and Karen.

Past and present Women's Olympiad members took an active role in organizing activities held at this year's event. Yuanling Yuan, top-rated female player in Canada, introduced her new program, Chess in the Library, by allowing participants to play giant chess games. If only we had a giant clock!

Current Canadian Women's Champion, Dina Kagramanov, was also a pleasure to have at the event. She refereed our youngest sections, and presented the final awards. Yuanling and Dina will represent the women's top two boards at the next Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. We wish them the best.

Hazel Smith, a past Olympiad team member, assisted with many of the traditional side activities. This included the puzzle contest, colouring contest, and elimination draw. She would like to thank Rebecca and Jean for helping out, as well as congratulate all the wonderful little designers and prize winners.

Of course, we cannot forget to mention Natalia Khoudgarian, a long-time supporter of our tournament and chess in general. Unfortunately, Natalia had to take care of her daughter at home, and was dearly missed.

We would also like to give a big thank you to our volunteers who helped with set-up, transportation, registration, organization, photo taking and clean-up. Lunch and snacks table were continually run by our volunteers, Stephen, Annie and Sheau Ling year after year. Thank you to the Chess'n Math Association (CMA) for continued support, helping in publicity and equipment. We are happy to donate a portion of each player's entry fee to the CMA. Additionally, thanks everyone else (participants, coaches, teachers, and parents) who made our day run so smoothly. I hope to see you all next year. Have a safe, happy summer.
