General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I get immediate access to it from my work computer (well - at this moment anyways) - but not my home one (Sympatico). I'll try a "tracert" when I get home to see if there is a bottleneck somewhere.

I believe Bob Armstrong is also on Sympatico... perhaps there is a peering bottleneck, but out of curiosity, what dns servers do you (and Bob) use?
Rogers dns servers are known to be overloaded and provide between poor and brutal performance... I imagine Sympatico dns servers are similar...
You might try using OpenDNS or (my preference) the Level3 dns servers at: 4.2.2.1 4.2.2.2 4.2.2.3 ... to .6
Using Opera 9.51 or Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.16 under XP, the new forum at chesscanada.info loads quickly. AVG AV in both cases. I have not signed up yet (or have I?) so this is no test of authentication delays.
In view of costly insurance and litigation at the USCF, I thought that the CFC could learn from that experience by leaving the public forum business to the CMA and the Dark Boarders. Though I suppose that a forum could all be part of the marketing plan, a one-stop-shopping-for-chess in Canada.
In ye olde days, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, the GLs achieved a bit of polish (or whatever you want to call it) because the President and the Secretary would use the telephone (incidentally, when I click the italics thingie, the cursor should go to where I can resume typing, rather than to the beginning of the document), which was invented in 1876, just four years after the founding of the Canadian Chess Association. As a result, written comments were sometimes changed or enhanced by their authors before appearing in print in the GL. The use of the telephone provided a kind of palæolithic private forum for the govs and exec.

I have dial up and not sympatico. Sometimes the board is quick and sometimes impossible.
Something I've noticed about this type setup is the traffic is good when they start but tends to drop off. Threads are quickly forgotten as newer ones start and the older ones slide down the list. Probably most people don't even look at the pages of older threads to see what is there. I know I don't.
I am on sympatico. But I am a Neanderthal. I will have to take your post to my " Computer Doctor " to have him translate and take remedial action. Seems like those on Sympatico seem to all be having problems.
You're probably right. I'm on Sympatico too (although I had not noticed significant bottlenecks before with this sort of thing) but the problem magically cleared earlier today. It was definitely a routing problem of some sort and this board mechanism is a lot more intensive that way.
For Bob: let people here know if the problem clears up today for you; it looks like it was a DNS problem (i.e. new domain name but the existing servers haven't heard of it yet so they keep asking other servers until somebody knows that they should have turned left at Albuquerque.)
I have no problem with this site (same host) but have been experiencing VERY slow loads of the CFC forum ... sometimes taking sooooooooo looooooonnngg that the site times out and says it cannot load.
I just tried it now, though, and it loaded fine ...
I had been in contact with Chris and he said that he was not having any problem, I suggested that he contact the hosting company and ask anyway ... perhaps he did and they found something ...
Somebody has done something. The CFC Chess Forum site is now working like a charm for me. Let's hope it stays that way now. Thank you, thank you , thank you - to whomever ! You have my gratitude 'til my dying day.
I looked over the Governor's list and it strikes me there are a lot of Governor's who are either inactive politically or limit their involvement to voting yes/no to just a few motions. You don't see much input at all from a fair number of Governors.

It's still got spotty performance which means it's not been set up right. Sympatico has a huge customer base. Kind of a red flag of what might occur if they change the ratng software with inexperienced IT people thinking it will be simple.
I've set up dozens of websites, I'm not exactly inexperienced.
Given that 95% of visitors have not had the problem, most who did are no longer having the problem, and that I did nothing to try to fix it, it seems clear it is not a problem caused by anything that I did.
