The 50/50 group is important. They are the ones who read what you write and decide if they agree on the merits.

      Gary,
You are politically much too shrewd for me. My naive view is that people sitting on a fence can too easily fall over to the "dark side". ;)

Wait... is there any opinion in the first place? As a person, I don't know him very well...

It is your opinion on his opinions. As you can see some wholeheartedly agree with him, while others are on the opposite side of the fence. Then the 3rd group who views him as having some good ideas as well as some bad ones. I am waiting to save my vote until I can make a well-informed decision on the matter as I only know his opinion on a limited amount of subjects.

The poll's broken. Duncan Smith and I do not agree.

            I am surprised to see Tom O'Donnell in the first group. That's not very anarcho-capitalistic of you, Tom. -_-;

Exactly like that, but generally over a period of time not right at the beginning. that is hilarious.

Personally I think for myself. If anyone is curious why I voted "generally disagree" well the main two aspects would be :

                    1. The Quebec seperatist rants you posted quite a long time ago.
                    2. The arrogant tone that tends to distort your recent messages.

Contrary to your reply I am quite sure there are numerous well educated people who are in the "generally disagree" category. You could become a better person by spending less time trying to dismiss the capabilities of others and instead consider that we all bring valuable perspectives to the table.

Personally, I only voted disagree because Jean plays 1....e6 so often, a truly odious decision.

^seems reasonable, seeing as he should play the 'obviously' superior 1...c5.

                            Re: Opinion of Jean Hebert

53 replies so far. That's a lot. Is it fair to say that Jean Hébert has been confirmed as an opinion maker in this chess community? Or would that be odious name-calling? There are many, including myself, who would not attract so many votes, one way or the other. Who would care?

In the world of publishing, it doesn't matter whether the opinion is approved or not, only that it is regarded. Did Pat Burns become the number one radio talk show host because his opinions were always spot on? Howard Cosell? Rex Murphy? You either love them, or you love to hate them. All is love.

I'm reminded of an old joke. A well-off American farmer is being asked for the secret of his success. He says: "Well, every so often the Department of Agriculture would send an agent to help me with my farming. Especially if he had a college degree, I'd pay close attention to what he said, write everything down, and shake my head in agreement. Then once he went away, I'd look at the list and do the opposite of everything he suggested."

All I can say is I disagree with polls...

                                Re: Opinion of Jean Hebert-Poll

I think this poll is a joke and a bad joke at that.

-I'm surprised Larry allows such crap on his board
-If you don't agree with Jean on a certain topic fine, just say so and say why

This poll is just a veiled attack on someone who knows chess, the chess business and has substantial experience.

I don't know Jean. I've chatted with him briefly in the mid-80s in one of the Toronto International tournaments.

Just to be clear-Polls like this (and I hope I don't see any more) are not needed and an embarrsment to chesstalk.
