Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party

12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.

14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I am looking for information about Osias Bain.
Canadian Chess Chat had the following information about him in its March (3) issue for 1951:
"Osias Bain, 22, is planning to sharpen the ordinary chess player's conseption of organized chess in Canada.
This young mental giant, the product of Quebec, finished High School at the age of 14, graduated from Laval University at 20, and is doing post-grad work in physical chemistry at Laval, in the field of Infrared Spectrometry.
In chess: he won the Quebec City titel in 1947-8-9, the Quebec Provincial, co-starring with Jack Gersho in '48.
He became Secretary of the Chess Federation of Canada in 1948".
His father's name was Rubin.
I'd like to know if he is alive (he is 80-81 years old now). If yes, I'd like to get any contact information.

If you have learned anything more about Osias Bain, I'd be pleased to know. I am working in the archives of the Gaberbocchus Press and am writing brief biographies of the press's authors for research puposes and can give you a little information about Bain, but would like to know more.
On 13 October 1960 he advertised in the personal column of The Times : 'Imperturbable publisher of distinction sought for primitively written, controversial, most tendentious 45,000-word typed manuscript by Canadian D.Sc.' The author Stefan Themerson, who ran the Gaberbocchus Press replied and after some revision Gimani- from Gide, Marx, Nietzsche- was published under the pseudonym Edmund Héafod- itself a joking reference: The French poet Paul Valéry invented the alter ego Edmond Teste, 'Teste' being the Old French for 'head'; equally, 'héafod' is the Old English for 'head'.
The book was described in the blurb and advertisements as ' A research ballistician leaves the exact sciences to delve into philosophy and psychology and this is the remarkable diary of his thoughts.' and was admiringly reviewed in the Times Literary Supplement and elsewhere. Unfortunately Bain/Héafod- after writing some strange letters to Themerson- lost contact with the Gaberbocchus Press. His last letter was in September 1961- before the book was published- and furher attempts to get in touch with him failed.
I hope this is useful to you and- as I said- I'd be grateful for any information you have about this interesting and mysterious man.
He wrote several papers in the chemistry field - and another in 1954.
This paper names his "recent" address as CARDE, Valcartier. Canadian Armament Research and Development Establishment (CARDE)
The paper is titled "HYDROGEN PEROXIDE AND ITS ANALOGUES". H2O2 (peroxide)is used in many applications including rockets.
IMHO, that might be the reason his name is not found later in a scientific literature.
In 1948-49, Osias Bain was a co-author of the Chess Federation of Canada's submission to the Massey Commission (also known as the Massey-Levesque Commission) on culture in Canada, here. The co-signer was Leopold Christin. For what it is, it is a brilliant document, especially for a teenager.
I don't think that Osias was related to Andre Bain, Vancouver chessplayer (coincidentally probably born around 1949) of the late 1960s, early 1970s. I think that Andre was related to "Bain's Chocolates", a company to which I can't find a google reference, so perhaps this is way too much imagination. Ken Morton would know.

My mother's maiden name was Rachel Bain, sister to Osias Bain, which makes "Ozzy" my uncle. We were very close. I named my son, Ozias, after him. Would be happy to talk you about him as he was a very interesting man.
