Interesting breakdown on Australian chess federation website by rating...

    http://www.auschess.org.au/ratings/acfrate.htm

Totaling all the players gives 2212 members which is higher than Canada...

6 executive, 7 state representatives, and volunteers filling other postions.

Seems less cumbersome than our governor system...

Australia chess message board ShoutBox feature seems interesting, as well as the numerous specific topic threads as opposed to one on Chesstalk....

I also signed up. Note that the Canadian ChessTalk has 800 members (300 active) and they have 12,638 members. Perhaps Larry could investigate how they have marketed their site.

Canada and Australia have roughly the same populations and are resource based economies. Perhaps the "island" factor for them makes chess more popular there?

English chess federation has a nice looking website...
            http://www.englishchess.org.uk/

            Executives, volunteers, etc.

Note the Director of Marketing position, among others. Much more professional looking organization than the CFC...

              New Zealand chess federation...

              Executive

Note they only have 6 life members. The CFC has nearly 400 life members, which is about 1/3 of all adult members. No wonder the fees collected for office functions are so small and the foundation is so rich; since life memberships go into the foundation.

Note they have 3 people on sponsorship and publicity.

738 members on their rating list; but only 4.4 million total population

There has been talk recently of getting rid of CFC ratings and going to FIDE. Like Bob G, I think that this would be a mistake.

On the other hand, there is nothing to stop TDs in Canada from sending the crosstable results to the Australian chess federation (or any other one for that matter) for rating if they are dissatisfied with the CFC!? Just joking...

There have been some tournaments recently in the province of Quebec which have been USCF-rated.
