General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
On the CFC Ches Forum, I did a comparison of " logged in " viewers for the two CFC discussion boards ( Governors' Discussion Board, and members' CFC Chess Forum ), vs. ChessTalk, for Monday, July 5. In terms of logged in viewers, ChessTalk had about 4 times more than the CFC boards.
But it appears non-logged in viewers are not captured in the " members' list " feature. In this regard, Chris Mallon, board administrator, referred me to the Alexa website: http://www.alexa.com
Governor Ken Einarsson explained to me that this is a web traffic information site. He said that the site indicates that in Canada " chesstalk in tracffic is 14,376h most popular site and chess.ca is 77,673rd most popular site. " So in reality, in overall traffic, ChessTalk is only double the CFC boards' traffic.
So it seems the popularity of the CFC Sites has been slowly growing. But ChessTalk is still the more popular site. The members' CFC Chess Foum, however, tends to be a more serious " debate the CFC constructively " board, and this is not everyone's cup of tea. But it is serving its purpose of CFC providing its own positive place to discuss the future of the CFC.
All sites are proving worthwhile to the chess community.

Your conclusion is wrong as it based on the wrong data. The CFC board website address is chesscanada.info not chess.ca
As for the real comparison - I'm too biased - here and there I'm on the top list of posters :D (probably meaning that both boards have values in their own ways)
1. What is the first number - 12, 811 for CFC; 14, 376 for CMA ? Does this mean that CMA is only now 12 % busier than the CFC sites?
2. What is the second number - 613,708 for CFC; 508,507 for CMA? Does this mean the CFC site is 21% busier than the CMA site? I find that hard to believe !
3. Are these figures only re Canadian viewers?

Thanks but I guess I still don't understand. Is it counting those who google for the CFC sites or the CMA sites? And I don't know how Facebook and Youtube work - can you do a search from those sites too? Afraid you need to spoon feed me.
just because one might feel obligated to check both sites and thereby make up part of the traffic does not mean that the 2nd site is 'popular' or necessary.
The task I started out with on all this was trying to compare activity on the CMA site, vs the 2 CFC sites.
It seems that since non-logged in viewers are not captured in the " members' list ", activity can only be measured by counting the total number of views of the total number of threads in a defined period. Am I right on this?

It seems I am right on my assertion. But there is a problem.
I can look at only threads posted in a defined period, and total the views of those threads/replies.
But people are also replying to threads started before the defined period, during the defined period. There appears to be no way to determine those number of views - because the " views " is the total since the thread started, and it may have started before the defined period. So some of those views are OUTSIDE of the defined period and cannot be counted.
So my conclusion is that these boards have no way of computing the activityy in a defined period - at least not that an ordinary viewer has access to ! Am I right? ( who designed this anyway ? Is this not an important question re " views in a defined period " to get activity? ).
Chris Mallon, on the members' CFC Chess Forum, in a similar thread, advised I am right - no way to calculate number of views in a defined period.
