  • Playing Chess Drunk

We're having a little discussion on OzChess about whether a Canadian chess master really come to a chess game drunk, and during the course of the game he urinated over the chess board - or whether that is simply a fairy tale.

Is this story true, and if so, who was it and where did it happen?

Yes - it happened. Although I know the name and location, I will let others post them if they wish.

I think I heard about this story once. But if it is really about the same person, he's not alive anymore.

The person in question was quite well-liked, from all I've heard ( it is my experience after playing him in 2 tournaments ), and I think many would be happy to just let the incident fade.

Is his first name Michael and does his last name start with an S? If so, I know who it is.

Does it really make a difference?

If you decide to give it a try, make sure you use a vinyl board. Paper boards get soggy and hard to reuse.

I understand Alekhine was often drunk in his later years and one time relieved himself at the board.

Too bad it did not happen in Ottawa.
Then it would have been the highest ranked player ever to do it in our Nation's Capital ;)

                  Alex T. -

I guess http://www.ozchess.com is in direct competition with http://www.chesschat.org as far as Australian chess discussion boards go.

Can you give us the story?

I don't know what the fascination is with this story quite frankly. I agree completely with Bob Armstrong. This person was a good friend of mine whose life should not be defined nor measured by one incident I am sure he was not proud of.

Alex, I think you've got your reply. Maybe a Private Message to someone for the exact details. I really feel that I should just close this thread. Call me a censoring so-and-so but don't call me late for dinner. heh.
Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.
