General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
There is an idea of opening the new chess club in Toronto. The club will be located on Younge and Finch, which makes it easily accessible by public transport. Also there is a large TTC parking near by (free on weekends). Three separate rooms can be used, each of them accommodates up to 20 people. It means, theoretically, we can have blitz in one room, “serious” games in another, and lecture or other kinds of discussions in the third. Currently, the time which is available is Sunday from 10 AM till 2 PM, but, depending on demand, Saturday can be an option too.
Before I move ahead with this, I’d like to have a rough estimation of how many people would be interested, and also to hear suggestions on what you expect from chess club to provide.

Any chance to move a meeting date to Friday night?
Thank you, Egis.
Sunday is the best day for me to start this project without putting too much effort (and money:() in it.
Hi Vladimir,
At Chess'n Math/Strategy Games, 701 Mt Pleasant (South of Eglinton) in Toronto we have basement space for 20 people...sets are provided...I wanted to do something with the space but made only a feeble attempt a number of months ago. If this is something that could interest you, please send me an e-mail at bevand@chess-math.org.

Hi Larry,
Thank you for information ... I just don't see how this option is better than what I have right now. Here also boards, sets and even :) clocks won't be an issue. The biggest thing is people, and meanwhile I don't see this draws too much attention
I vote for Sundays so out-of-towners can attend occasionally.
David, let me know when you will be visiting Toronto.
We play Saturday and Sunday in North York Public Library, but in summer time outside on the benches beside the library (weather permitted) from 1pm - 10pm.
5120 Yonge St.
A computer beat me in chess, but it was no match when it came to kickboxing
It is tough question, Ernest. I don’t see how I can answer it right now :o. I invite you and everyone else to visit free for the first time. You will see the place, we will talk about what would you like the club to do (as I said: blitz tournaments, CFC rated ones, lectures etc), I will see how much people are willing to participate on more or less permanent basis, and then it will be much clearer what membership fees the club can offer. Please, pass this invitation to all the players who might be interested.

Please don't take it personally, and I appreciate what you trying to do but you have to and answer tough questions first, otherwise you just fooling yourself and everybody else. Until the future of Jerusalem can be decided there will be no peace in Middle East. No matter how many future "concessions" will be made or how nice and big, three rooms in the club.

While it is late, but the best timing was before the CO to start the process and to make a announcement or to give simple fliers during the CO.
Chesstalks might be read by many people but only several of them writes/answers. (and don't bother to write private messages or emails + divide that number by the Canada's area ;)
"“serious” games in another,"
Consider to host a FIDE rated closed type tournament (with the shortest available time control to fit into your time-frame)
Several years ago L.Henry did one, and it attracted about 15-20 people - two sections FIDE and CFCs.
Having an experience you might bid for the Toronto Closed :)

Of course, you are right but I'm not in rush here. I can start it anytime when there are enough people ready to play. Every one who reads this on ChessTalk can spread the news and … we’ll see. Flier is a good idea, and I'll try to make it ready for the next big tournament in our area which is ... (need your help here).
"FIDE rated tournament" - sure, why not? I just though to start with something less complicated.

Wow! I wonder who, in your opinion, should decide on "the future of Jerusalem" but this is for another topic (or we can discuss it when you come to the club :)).
As per our matter, I think I made a pretty good offer - come to see and play for free, help me estimate the situation, and, hopefully, at the end of your first visit you'll have all the information about fees. It doesn't take too much, does it? I even may bring home-made cookies on "first come - first eat" basis :D.
The location is very convenient for me and it is an easy way to travel there via TTC and the Viva. I think myself and many other players - (especially Juniors who rely on TTC / Viva) would appreciate it if the Toronto Closed as well as other FIDE rated, high-level events were held there.

Hello Jesse,
Couldn't agree with you more about the location. Next year Toronto Closed is, definitely, the option. And, yes we also can handle FIDE rated tournaments. Right now I can think about 8-9 players with FIDE rating (myself included :)) who might play. Hopefully, it will be more.
If you can sent me private message with your contact info, and maybe others who is interested to play, it will help.
