    Unfortunately - invited foreign GM's add to the expenses of an organizer, and usually reduce the prize money available for local players. Additional players may attend because a strong player is playing - but others won't for the same reason.

    Support the local players - for the right price, Alexandre Lesiege would play.

      Having Alexandre as an active player again would be awesome!

        Is this FIDE rated?

        If so the organizers have not registered it with CFC office and thus FIDE.

        FIDE now requires 1 month's notice.

          It's not advertised as being FIDE-rated (nor CFC-rated).

            I'm not even sure if Aleksandr Lenderman is paid for playing in this tournament, but if he is, it's surely nothing in comparison to what Lesiege asks for.
            I don't think he deserves to be invited into tournaments if he asks as much money as one of the world's top GM would. Why would the organizers invite a player that doesn't seem to be interested in playing chess, and who's only interested in money?

              Alexandre has told me that he would love to play chess again - but it's not worth it - but if someone wants to pay him the right amount of money, he would play.

              He's a GM - why shouldn't he get paid a reasonable amount? If another GM wants to play for nothing - that's his business.

                We did invite local players, and this includes one local GM. He has not replied yet.

                We did not go after any foreign GMs. Mr. Lenderman was the one who approached us during COQ and given his minimal request we could not pass up the opportunity to invite him. Strong local masters will hopefully appreciate the opportunity to maybe play a GM.

                Others players who consider that their chance for a high prize is gone might notice that this year we are offering four place prizes vs three last year.

                Getting back Alexandre Lesiege would be great indeed, but others have tried to find the "right price" as you say and we see no sign of any positive development. If Mr. Lesiege reads this and feels interested in coming back to the chess competition, we invite him to contact us championnatdemontreal@gmail.com and we will be happy to discuss.

                  The Montreal Open is FQE rated only. Our understanding of FIDE rules is that in no way could our tournament qualify - for one thing, five rounds is too short ; and there are other requirements as well that we do not meet.

                    Perks to Can. GM's at 2011 Can. Closed

                    Hi Hugh:

                    The CFC Handbook, on the Canadian Closed/Zonal, now reads, as a result of our passing at the Toronto July AGM Motion 2010-13 ( Bluvshtein/Armstrong ):

                    811. ( a ) Each player will be responsible for paying his own entry fee, accommodation and meal expenses with the exception of the following:
                    ( i ) the Canadian Champion and Runner-Up shall have their entry fee, accommodation and meal expenses paid by the tournament organizers;
                    (ii ) free entry shall be given to IM’s and GM’s;
                    ( iii ) free accommodation should be provided for GM’s;

                    We do not yet have a bid for the 2011 Closed/Zonal. But if we did, would Alexandre now play if he was given free entry, and free accomdodation? Or would he want more than that to play in the 2011 Canadian Championship? I note that he still has a 2528 FIDE rating.

                    Bob

                      Five rounds not enough for a tournament to be FDE rated?? History proves otherwise...

                        Lesiege should be paid whatever people think his presence is worth. Let market forces dictate, the invisible hand and all that.

                        I'd also like to point out that anybody who views chess as a feasible money making endeavour hasn't really thought it out. Pretty much nobody makes good money from chess... Maybe top 50 or top 100 players can make good money at it, but other than that there is a million other jobs that would pay you better money, and you don't even have to be good at them to get paid.

                        If Lesiege only wants to make money and cares nothing for the game, then I doubt he will be missed.
