General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
We have submitted the results to Gerry at the CFC in order to have the event rated by the Chess Federation of Canada and the World Chess Federation and they will no doubt rate the event within a week.
Gerry has been a total pleasure to work with on this!
He also explained how the current FIDE rules work on this (I have not read FIDE rules since...I learned how to read :)
This is what he wrote in an e-mail to me today (he had only gone through the girls sections at this point):
"FIDE will only rate results against FIDE rated players.
FIDE unrated players only bank results if they score at least 1/3 against FIDE rated players.
Most of the girls are unrated even though many more do have FIDE ID's.
I have determined the following;
Girls sections - Rateable by FIDE
U18 & U16
Girls sections - Not rateable by FIDE
U14 - Only 1 FIDE rated player
U12 - No FIDE rated players
U10 - No FIDE rated players
U8 - No FIDE rated players"
As usual great CMA rating service for the marquee events.
I wonder about a couple of unrated players: Aidan and Ryan Sowa. Since the CMA rating procedure has never been published, I can't say they are wrong, but they look way out of whack with performances of similar scoring players in their groups.
Other unrateds may have similar odd ratings........

Hi Fred,
Please send me an e-mail with what you believe to be "odd".
Congratulation for the nice youth chess tournament. I guess Canada get 4 CM and 1 WCM from the crosstable, how many our kids exactly got CMs or WCMs by this tournament?

How about a FIDE unrated player who ever scored at least 1/3 against FIDE rated players before in other tournament, however in this tournament only played one FIDE rated player? For eg. Michael Song scored 1/4 in Canadian open against FIDE rated players and Scored 1/1 in NAYCC. Will this game be banked?

Unfortunately, even if he scored 2/2 it wouldn't count. You need a minimum of three opponents no matter what. So it won't count, he still needs 5 more games.

If I'm not mistaken it's only 3 CMs:
Hong Rui Zhu - North American Champion in U12 Open
Ziyi Qin - North American Champion in U14 Open
Arthur Calugar - North American Champion in U16 Open

Hi Fred,
Thanks for your e-mail.
The point you bring up makes perfect sense. I am going to look into it this weekend...but from what I see we could make the change you suggested and simply re-rate the event on Monday.
This would only change the ratings of players who are unrated and those who played unrated players. I will be less cryptic by Monday :)

Hong Rui Zhu - North American Champion in U12 Open

I search for the fide website and it said: "America’s Regional Youth Festival
U-18, 16, 14, 12,10, 8 1st, up to 3 players = CM title" same as WCM.
In U18B, Alexander Martchenko and Victor Shen, both got 6/7. They supposed to be recognized as 1st place, no matter Alex lost in play off(he just lost champion title, that's it). So, Alex should get CM title?
Same as in U8G, Mathanhe Kaneshalingam should get WCM title?
yes, we had an experience from last year NAYCC in Mexico. CM or WCM title for same score in first place or second place. but it is not big deal of CM or WCM title, better get FM or WFM. That was CFC staff told us not necessary to apply. Only difference is only first place each section has right to have free accomp. hotel+ eat in Pan-American next year. Second place is not a invited player.
