    Re: olympiad - Round 1

Round 2 will have the gentlemen facing Uzbekistan, and the ladies - Kazakhstan.

Uzbekistan has GM Alexei Barsov playing - who has visited Canada a few times. After drawing something like 10 out of 11 games in under 20 moves in a Montreal International. he was not invited back.

I think we should get at least 2-2 against Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

Another neat feature is to click on the little 4 green squares over to the right of the match-up. You see all 4 games.

        Already some suprises!
        On the very first board:
        1.1 GM Grischuk Alexander 2760 - IM Collins Sam E 2431 ½ - ½

        7.1 GM Mamedyarov Shakhriyar 2756 - IM Solomon Kenny 2394 ½ - ½

        6.1 IM Arias Santana Mauricio 2345 - GM Akopian Vladimir 2691 ½ - ½

        12.1 IM Mas Hafizulhelmi 2422 - GM Adams Michael 2728 ½ - ½

        13.1 GM Smeets Jan 2669 - IM Munoz Lisandro 2391 0 - 1

By the way, if you want to watch the live games, go on www.chessbomb.com... It is definitely the best website.

Round 1 for Canada will start being interesting in a few years when Canada will be ranked near the top of the bottom half, instead of being near the end of the top half.

It is always better to see 4-0 score than 1.5-2.5 in first rounds. For upsets (e.g., Charbonneau-Anand) there are other rounds :D

On what do you base such a prediction? The Eurozone is going under faster than the Titanic and North America is fast losing the ability and will to send money to poorer nations.

Maybe one day I'll tell you about my encounter with Siberia. :)

True, with Canada you never know. But I really hope we are capable of beating Mozambique badly. I mean, seriously! I just hope we won't lose to Iraq like 2 years ago. We are probably the only western country that can justify invading Iraq based on them beating us in high level competition!

GM Bareev, captain of Russia gives a frank interview about the round 1. Insightful description on the condition of each player.
