TORONTO CLOSED CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2011

January 23 - March 6

This will be an eight player round-robin tournament comprising of the eight highest rated players who apply. In addition there will be up to 5 reserve sections according to the CFC rating.

The deadline for entries will be 6 PM Sunday, January 16, 2011 at “The Knights of Chess” club located on 5635 Younge street, suites 201-202, Toronto (near Younge and Finch intersection), where the draw for positions will take place. Championship section will be CFC and FIDE rated, and reserve sections will be CFC rated. CFC membership is required.

Drinks and snacks will be provided.

Schedule: Games will be played on consecutive Sundays at 10 AM at “The Knights of Chess” club
(Finch subway station TTC parking is free on Sundays)

Time control:
Championship: 90 minutes for the game with 30 seconds increment from the first move.
Reserve sections: 90 minutes for the game

Entry fee: $85 (cash or check payable to Vladimir Birarov) by 6 PM, January 16, 2011.

Prizes:
Championship (95% of entry fees)
1st - $320 & Trophy
2nd - $200
3rd - $120

Reserve sections (75% of entry fees).
($20 administration costs could be paid by Chess Clubs for their representatives).

The games for the reserved section are only 3 hours long.

Last year games started at 6 PM, as it has for many years prior.
So what's the reason for starting so early this year?

Last year games started at 6 PM, as it has for many years prior.
So what's the reason for starting so early this year?

1) Any weekend tournament has Sunday round at 10 AM (sometimes even earlier). I do realize, however, that here it is not only one week but 7 weeks in a row.

2) It is possible to change TC in reserved section(s) to be the same as in "Championship" section - we'll just need more digital clocks with increment option.

3) For few last years Toronto Closed was organized by Willowdale Club where time allocated for games is 6:30 - 10:00 PM. Therefore it was impossible to make it FIDE-rated event (minimum official TC is 90+30). So, next year we've decided to try something new. In the new location 10 AM is the latest possible time to start in order to complete games in "Championship" section until next scheduled activity. Games in reserved section(s) with current TC (90/G) can start at 11 AM if it helps.

11 AM in the Reserved Section would be fine for me. 10 AM is just out.

You might wait for some feedback posted here or Email to you from
last year's Reserved players before deciding though.

Reserved section doesn't get a big turnout, so something that works for
everyone is best. I doubt you will get any FIDE rated players there this
year.

I have played in the TC Reserves for a number of years now. Unfortunately, weekends do not work for me, so I'll have to miss this year.

There are many players in Toronto under 2100 who have a FIDE rating. And, being a round-robin, only 3 players need to already have FIDE ratings for everyone to get FIDE ratable games. This may attract some stronger players who don't yet have a FIDE rating.

To get a FIDE rating need to score 1 point and play 9 games over 2 years.

It'll be interesting to see. The impression I get is that with so few FIDE-rated tournaments in Canada, many players jump on the opportunity to try to improve their FIDE rating. As well as other players who want to get a FIDE rating.

To get a FIDE rating need to score 1 point and play 9 games over 2 years.

Isn't that 1 point per event?

They might get 3 FIDE rated players. Last year, we
only had one player over 2000... who will likely
play the open section this year

Vlad, would a preregistration list for the reserved section
on a new thread, with each player listing their FIDE rating
(if any), and whether they prefer 10 or 11 AM, help settle
the issues?

Yes, it is 1 point per event.

Ed, I'll post the list of registered players at some point (in this thread or another). Discussion on whether it's 10 or 11 AM is not necessary. Since Championship section games start at 10 AM anyhow, it will be possible to move any reserved section game from 10 to 11 (and vise versa) if agreed with the opponent and confirmed with TD.

if they said no.

This is none of my business which makes me ideally suited for objective comments. :)
With this formula (prize structure and entry fees) most if not every top Toronto player will stay away. What is the point then to call "Toronto Closed" an event that is simply another open with sections ? Without the will to draw the best players, there is no point in calling it "Toronto Championship" and even less in adding the word "Closed".

Why you want more money Jean? Go get sponsorships.

Not a fan of players (even GMs) complaining about lack of prize. As long as the organizer disclose how much out of total goes to prize (assuming reasonable), then its ok. There not enough good organizers in Canada.

People should not expect to make good money playing chess unless your last name is Carlsen or Anand.
