        a wrinkle - if W decides to get a Queen to play Qe2#, black can thwart that by promoting HIS pawn to a Knight, thus forcing White to use the underpromotion you suggested.

            Nice. If White promotes to a Queen and Black to a knight, surely Qe6+ and the Black King jumps around between g and h.

              Correct, the point is that there must be only a single solution and it has to be the Knight promotion because the Q promotion does not work for that reason.
