I call this system "NHL playoff style", and I think it ideal for knock-out tournaments...

From the official website:

3. 4. Pairings.

3. 4. 1. All participants will start from Round 1.

3. 4. 2. For purposes of pairings the players shall be ranked according to the most recent rating list. In case of equality of two or more players, the player with the greater number of games played during the period covered by the list shall be higher seeded. In case of equal number, the order will be decided by draw of lots. The Women’s World Champion will be seeded number one.

3. 4. 3. Pairings shall follow the principle of top half vs. lower half reversed (1-64, 2-63...). Thus the highest ranked player of the top half shall play the lowest ranked player of the bottom half. The second ranked player of the top half shall play the penultimate ranked player of the bottom half. And so on.

3. 4. 4. For rounds 2 to 5, pairings shall follow the same procedure as in 3. 4. 3, with the clarification that if the lower ranked player wins in any match, she shall automatically assume the position of the higher ranked player.

3. 4. 5. All the participants will start from round 1. No postponement shall be allowed except with permission of the FIDE President.

I guess they seeded Kosteniuk 1st because she is the current champion?

The rating variablility is quite different between the top and the bottom halfs...
It is weird how the top 13 are within 100 points of each other, but the bottom 13 span 300 points.

I certainly agree. The lower rated players have to show their ability in the first round.

Lol, these knockout tourneys are fun... for the higher rated players. It's like a massacre in the first couple rounds. Fide should have atleast made the systems more like 1v32, 33v64 etc instead of pairing the highest and lowest together.

Lol, these knockout tourneys are fun... for the higher rated players. It's like a massacre in the first couple rounds. Fide should have atleast made the systems more like 1v32, 33v64 etc instead of pairing the highest and lowest together.

Since the prizes escalate the further a player advances, wouldn't it be much better to be player 33 in your scenario, rather than player 32?

Yup, it's probably the prizes that influenced the pairing system Larry. It's probably too late to change the whole knockout system now but it's kinda silly that lower rated reps pretty much have no chance in their games. It's like telling a 2100-2200 that in order to advance, they gotta scalp an IM or GM. Some of them probably never even did it before

are you serious. there's literally no other way to do a knock-out. every knockout in the history of the world has been done this way...

I like the tennis system. In grand slams there are a total of 128 players and 32 seeds. The seeds can't play against each other in the first 2 rounds, so you still get blowouts, but the guys ranked 100 and lower still has a chance, since they can play against anyone and not just the top seeds. Then in round 3 if everything goes according to plan and the seeds actually win the top 16 play randomly against those ranked 17-32, in the fourth round 1-8 play against 9-16. If a seed loses the player who beats him essentially takes his place in the draw. So if everything goes according to plan the final features players ranked 1-2 (so Nadal and Federer).
