This does not appear to be a secret ballot.

And perhaps many "fans" do not realize that there is a single (aggregate) fan vote that is added to the votes of "chess journalists" ...

Is there a list of all the "chess journalists" that may vote?
...Mike Pence: the Lord of the fly.

Good question. But whoever they are, I hope they remember Thomas winning a GM title while representing Canada at the Olympiad! ChessTalkers seem to have forgotten it...

Agreed - Thomas should be on the short list too. Tough year to choose only one!

I'm one of the chess journalists who gets to vote in David Cohen's poll:), because of the Scarborough CC newsletter ( which goes to both members and non-members ).

I can confirm what Hal says - I had a heck of a time trying to order my first four picks for the year!

The journalists are the ones I know about. If you know of any others, I will invite them.

Bob Armstrong - Scarborough Community of Toronto Chess News & Views e-newsletter
                Sylvain Barbeau - journalist
Stéphane Beaudoin - Echec+ rédacteur en chef
Jonathan Berry - Globe & Mail
Jeff Coakley - CMA Scholar's Mate
                Lawrence Day - Toronto Star
Tony Ficzere - CFC Canadian Chess News
                Jean Hébert - HPE
Maria Manuri - AEM Échec au Roi
Ralph Marconi - CCCA's "CHECK!" editor
Cecil Rosner - Winnipeg Free Press
Stephen Wright - British Columbia Chess Federation 'Bulletin' e-newsletter

Regarding the Fan Ballot (which is added to the journalists' ballots), the voting is close amongst Jason Cao, Thomas Roussel-Roozmon, and Yuanling Yuan. I was very surprised and impressed. This is the first time in 8 years that a player's accomplishments away from the board have been recognized (and she wasn't the only one!).

Gordon - it is not secret because I count the votes by hand (in response to previous year objections over electronic ballot stuffing), but it is secret in the sense that I don't reveal who voted for whom.

                Regards,

                David
