A number of participants (and others) have proposed special events once a month as an alternative to our regular Saturday Blitz at Mom's Cafe. Here are some possibilities. Please vote on a choice but only if you would take part occasionally.
1. HANDICAP TOURNAMENT
This would be a blitz tournament but with a time handicap
against the player with the higher blitz rating- say 1 minute
deducted for every 100 rating point difference.
There would be no class prizes as the handicap would put the
lower-rateds on an approximately equal footing.
2. BUGHOUSE TOURNAMENT
This is the popular two-man team chess with one player with White
and his partner playing Black. Captured pieces are placed at the
partner's disposal to be placed anywhere on his board to
constitute a move. Each player plays with a 5 minute time limit.
3. FISCHER RANDOM
Each player arranges his own men on the back rank as he chooses.
The game proceeds under normal blitz rules. Could be played
with increase in time limit (say 10 minutes) to allow for the novelty.
4. 15 MINUTE ACTIVE
Each player is allowed 15 minutes for the game. Since matches would
last up to 30 minutes, this would be a five single rounds swiss.
Each of the above would pose their own unique problems. In #1, setting
the digital clocks to read 2,3, or 4 minutes may be a problem for the
uninitiated (myself). In #2 and #3 ruling on disputes would be a problem
- I have no experience with such events. In #4 there may be pairing
problems as colour assignments would need to be considered.
