  • Ottawa Winter Open: $30 discounted registrants

Hi chess fans, I am pleased to announce that registrations are off to a nice start (at least 38) for the 2011 Ottawa Winter Open, scheduled for January 14th-16th. Note that I have been a bit sick at home the last couple of days, and there might be more registrations sitting in the mailbox at the post office.

Some travelling players have concerns about travelling in case of inclement weather, but remember that even earlier in the day before the first round, you can simply defer your registration to a future Ottawa weekender (we have 5 events per year)! If that flexibility appeals to you, then please feel free to take advantage of the $30 triple-early discount for paying in December! Since the rest of this month can be a rather busy time of the year, I am not totally sure at this time just how many Thursday evenings I can make it out to the RA club to take payments in person. As of the writing of this post, I expect to be there tomorrow evening from 715pm to 8pm, but for all of the rest of this month, if you want to be sure of getting the $30 discount, please also feel free to mail in your registration and payment, as per the instructions at the end of the event details webpage : http://www.eoca.org/htm/tournaments_2010-11.html

Is there someone in your life who keeps asking what they can get you for Christmas? How about registration to the Ottawa Winter Open?! And if it would help, send me their email address, and I can help them register you! (of course, other holiday names are also available! ;)

    Yours in chess,

    Aris Marghetis, FIDE Arbiter
    Organizer/TD, EOCA President

Please note that we are looking for up to 5 floater players :
    - floater players help the TD guarantee no “forced byes”
    - floater players are paired and rated like all the players
    - floater players play for free, but under some conditions :
----- they play in 0 to 5 rounds, depending on byes by all the players
----- they can be phoned/texted in the hour before every single round
----- they have a current CFC membership by the time of first pairings
If you are interested in being a floater player for this event, please apply by email

    --------- original event announcement ---------

The Eastern Ontario Chess Association (EOCA) organizes the EOCA Grand Prix, a series of weekend tournaments over the 2010-2011 chess season.

The next EOCA event in Ottawa is the Ottawa Winter Open, set for January 14th-16th. It will consist of 5 rounds, with flexible bye and discount options.

We are planning 5 sections (rated CFC, upper sections also rated FIDE), and prizes for every 200 rating points (last 3 Ottawa events averaged >$2700!)

For more details on this event, and a great webpage for all of the events in the 2010-2011 EOCA Grand Prix, please consider bookmarking this weblink :

cannot make it to the RA club tonight

Hi there, sorry for the late notice, but I have been infected by my son with some darn flu bug, and have decided to not attend the RA club tonight. If you were planning on meeting me there to pay for the Ottawa Winter Open, please consider mailing in your payment as per the instructions at the end of the event details webpage included at the bottom below. I do not know yet whether I can attend the RA club next Thursday, the 30th, but as of now, given we have family visiting, I would assume that I cannot make that date either. However, anything mailed with a postmark before January 1st gets the $30 discount! :)

To everyone at the RA club, and all the players who I see either in Ottawa or elsewhere across our great country (or in faraway places like Greece for the WYCC! ;), and to all other ChessTalk readers: Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year! :)
