    Re: Fyi

    Ken,

How about using a descriptive Title / Subject line? Then we will have more to go on. You know, about whether we want to risk making an offsite leap to a link we've never heard of. Or if you think that novelty and surprise are powerful motivating factors, you could reuse a previous similar non-descriptive title, because this isn't the first time. Then other forum members will know that your fyi links are harmless enough that nobody has warned against them. You could still add a few words of explanation in the message body.

"FYI" means "For Your Information", meaning that the contents are something that the recipient will be interested in, but that no reply or action is expected. In the old days when paper was supreme, "FYI" would often be marked on a photocopy. In those days, an FYI meant some effort on the part of the sender (often a postage stamp and addressing an envelope), and was frequently sent to only one recipient. This investment by the sender was almost always sufficient to convince the recipient to, at least, take a quick look. In this internet age, our mailboxes are full of exhortations whose only purpose is to make us visit some malware site. I submit that in public forums, a bald "FYI" is no longer sufficient.

So an informative Title for the message might have been
X Comic Strip refers to Chess or
Funny chess reference in X comic strip

where X is the name of the comic strip.
