Michel Vasquez offers book prize to winning junior:
Michel Vasquez,
I would like to thank you for your donation of the book "Lasker's Greatest Chess Games" to the club. It will be awarded to the winner of the Junior section of this weekends event Hamilton Winter Open 2011.
This was a special section I created for kids so they could get experience playing in a chess tournament for cheap. (When they register the entry fee is 10 dollars)
Your donation will help me promote the game to new players.
Once again thanks!

No limit, no extra fee, but we reserve the right to refuse entry for obviously uncompetitive players.Originally posted by Rene Preotu View PostCan players play up above their current CFC rating? What's the limit: 100 points, 200 points or no limit? Do they have to pay extra?
Registrations now at 50 players! :)

Re: Hamilton Winter Open 2011
Thank you Garvin for updating the pre registered list. (see the second post on this thread). We now have 41 preregistered, with a week to go. I believe that is ahead of last year. :)

Bravo!,
I like a full bloodbath on the board! No wimpy draw offers to share first prize! Hopefully that will whet the GM's appetite.

Okay, bumping this to the top again!
Our apologies for all the spelling mistakes on the pre registration list. :o
That is one reason Garvin insists on a confirming email to register, not just word of mouth.
Stuart Brammall - is that you on the pre reg list, not "Steve Brammal" :o
Bindi - how about it, are you playing? :)
Please send an email to chesshamilton@gmail.com to register. :D

Re: Hamilton Winter Open 2011
More good news! :)
An anonymous donor has stepped forward with a special prize. $100 to anyone with a perfect 5.0 score in the Open section. The prize is subject to 2 GM's playing in the event, but anyone is eligible to win it.
Our generous donor is looking forward to a fighting game between GM Sambuev and GM So. :D

Re: Hamilton Winter Open 2011
Now that you have two GM's coming will John Hebert show as well?
Kerry are you on the Pre-registered list as well. I joined last week.
Hope this new news of GM's will bring in some old friends as wells.

Re: Hamilton Winter Open 2011
It's clear the kid should be seeded #1, but other then that we do not need a specific rating for him.
The rating conversion formula is extremely crude, and should not really be considered accurate.
I think it would be more appropriate to arbitrarily seed him 1st, then only after the event publish a rating (equal to his performance).
Presuming all estimated cfc rating for So are higher then Sambuev's, there will be no difference in the resultant pairings, regardless of whether the estimate is 2719 or 2900.
Further more, using this method will result in more rational changes in the ratings of his opponents.

I think this is what we should do as well.Originally posted by Rene Preotu View PostCFC Ratings vs FIDE Ratings

For Players CFC 2200+ (169 players): FIDE = CFC - 91.9
So add 92 to 2667 (FIDE rating) to get the CFC rating of 2759

Re: Hamilton Winter Open 2011
Great job guys,
I must admit that when it was initially suggested suggested that you try and get him to play, I thought it was something daydream-- even with the free soup.
In retrospect, GM So's willingness to play is likely due in no small part to this event not being Fide rated-- something to consider.

Re: Hamilton Winter Open 2011
If Bators CFC rating is 2718, then Wesley should be assigned at least 2850 CFC for this tournament, its only fair :-)
(I'm serious)
We won't make Wesley So sit at board 2 for round 1 of Hamilton Open right?

That's fantastic, I can't wait to see Bator vs So just so I can see the difference between a super-gm and a regular one.Originally posted by Bob Gillanders View PostGreat news. I am very pleased to announce GM Wesley So (fide 2667) will be playing at the Hamilton Winter Open.
That's two GM's folks - it should be quite a show! :D
