  • CFC Starts " Tweeting " !!

Today, Wednesday, March 16, CFC, with the help of SWOCL/Ont. CFC Governor & OCA President, Michael von Keitz, opened a Twitter account. You will find us at http://www.twitter.com/ChessFedCan.

We have now posted our first two tweets. I, as CFC Public Relations Coordinator, will mainly be responsible for CFC " tweeting ". I hope to post a tweet once a day on some interesting Canadian chess event, topic, happening, etc..

We hope you will start to " follow " us.

Bob Armstrong, CFC Public Relations Coordinator/Tweeter

Great! They might have chosen a name that doesn't invite toilet humour.

ChessFedCan? I can see the picture on the KS site now, an outhouse.

It's not too late to get a catchier name. ChessCan is better. ChessCanada is better.

          Bob and Bob,

Make sure that you set up a facebook page for the CFC. It will give you a much better opportunity to get information out to chess players around the world. It is simple to create...

            Hi Paul:

We had talked about that as well. We just started with Twitter. Once we're settled in, Facebook was to be next.

No offense, but what the hell are you talking about "get settled in"? Opening a facebook and twitter account is about a 2 minute process. Maybe I'll just do it.

I must say it's pretty scary in this day to think the CFC has a "public relations coordinator" who needs help to open a twitter account.

You're right anyone can open an account. Doing something useful with it, is the harder thing. I for one think Bob has done a great job this year as Public Relations Co-ordinator, and to expand his mandate one step at a time makes sense.

                  CFC & " Tweeting "

                  Hi David:

I am the first one to admit that I tend to be technologically challenged. By the same token, the position of Director of Publicity, and subsequently Public Relations Coordinator, was unfulfilled for years before I volunteered. I may not be the most suitable PRC, but I was the one who volunteered, so long as I could adequately do the job.

In fact, I opened my own personal twitter account all on my very own, all by my very little self ! ( http://www.twitter.com/ChessPleb ). I also opened, on my little very own, the twitter account for the Cooperative Chess Coalition ( CCC ), for which I am Coordinator ( http://www.twitter.com/coopchesscoalit ).

The CFC twitter account idea was initiated by CFC SWOCL/Ont Governor Michael von Keitz ( not me ), and he is the one who volunteered to open it, with me then taking over as " High Tweeter ". It also involved some coordination with the CFC office to use their e-mail. Not too difficult I expect, for Michael, and not too difficult for me to take over.

So, stumbling along, CFC is now " tweeting ", and using one of the modern social networking systems to communicate with the general public, and to take another step in " chess promotion ".

Seems to me people should be supportive of CFC for what has been accomplished.

                  Bob

                    CFC Twitter Site Developing

After only 3 days, CFC has managed to develop a very interesting Twitter site.

We are now " following " 26 tweeters. They include 15th and current World Champion, Viswanathan Anand, # 2 in the world, Magnus Carlsen, the # 1 rated in the Americas, Hikaru Nakamura, the # 1 woman player, Judit Pogar. her popular sister, Susan Polgar, former Women's World Champion, Alexandra Kosteniuk, and popular woman blogger, Natalia Pogonina. We have found a number of CFC member tweeters to follow, as well as a number of chess news sites.

We are already being followed by 15 tweeters.

                    Our URL is : http://www.twitter.com/ChessFedCan.

Come and take a look - you may find some CFC member on our site you recognize. And if you are a tweeter, start " following " us and we will in turn start following you. We like to keep track of and communicate with CFC member Tweeters.

Bob, Pubic Relations Coordinator/High Tweeter !

I would prefer to see a complete name in the title/name:

Get short, timely messages from Chess Fed of Canada.
                        # Name Chess Fed of Canada

                          Twitter Site Name/Username

                          Hi Egis:

Michael von Keitz set up the Profile Page when he opened the account. I believe he ran into a maximum character problem, and that's why he had to shorten CFC's name somehow - he chose " Chess Fed of Canada " to fit the message box, for our account holder name.

As to our username, ChessFedCanada, we are in the process of trying to change it to " ChessCanada " which is easier to digest, but we're having a few technical problems with their website administration trying to do this. We hope to sort it all out shortly.

                          Bob

True, and I apologize for coming off so strongly. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

I set up a Chess Federation of Canada group page on FB with almost no content other thank some links to the CFC web site; those of you on FB, please search and Like.

Some interesting things come with it. One is the option to advertise your group to a targeted audience, and it shows you the potential "reach" of your ad. Right now, if I put in a target group of Canadian males who have listed an interest of "chess" in their FB account, the potential reach listed is :

                            Estimated Reach
                            21,920 people
                            ■who live in Canada
                            ■who are male
                            ■who like chess
■who are not already connected to Chess Federation of Canada

Now, setting up an ad is a bit more complex than just a random group (since how wide your ad goes depends heavily on what you're willing to pay) and I need some time to read this stuff. I'll check it out when I have some spare time.

                              Hi David:

Thx - no problem. I see you are now " following " the CFC Tweet Site, and I now have it following you as well. We'll all look forward to your tweets on the CFC Site.

Also, nice initiative on FB. I'll look forward to taking a look at it.

And as to your offer to help out, I'll definitely keep it in mind. As I have said, I am not the greatest with modern technology, though I manage to get along. But if I run into problems, I may call on you. Thx.
