  • Trois-Rivieres update

Only 220 players this year - prizes based on 255.

3 GM's: Kovalyov, Sambuev, and Roussel-Roozmon - all have 2/2. In general - the favourites have been winning.

    Crosstable (after 2 rounds): http://pages.globetrotter.net/jrboutin/Standings.html
    Round 3 pairings: http://pages.globetrotter.net/jrboutin/Pairings.html

No games (PGN or live) available at this time.

In my mind these are disappointing numbers...Hugh do you have the numbers from the last 10 years?

This was...for a number of years...the largest rated open chess event in Canada.

      Hi Larry:

Last year's Canadian Open was bigger, with 261 registrants.

        Re : Trois-Rivieres update

There had been some problems with the hotel and many players couldn't find a room. Apparently there is another event (a hockey tournament I think...) taking place in Trois-Rivières on the same weekend.

Another reason why the partîcipation is lower than it used to be is that there have been many tournaments recently and some player had to choose between them - sometimes deciding not to play in the COM.

          Hi Bob,

I must be living in the past :).

After checking the FQE site it looks like, in 2010, the tournament in Trois-Rivieres attracted 235 players...and I checked the Quebec Open and came up with 259...but I stand to be corrected on these numbers :)

The Canadian Open last year was awesome...The hotel was first class and the rates were incredible! Brian Fiedler and his team did an awesome job!

Now I am looking forward to a great summer in 2011!

Here are player counts and winners since 1985 (I will put in 2010 eventually).

Not necessarily the largest annual Swiss in Canada - but definitely the largest weekend Swiss.

GM Anton Koyalov won the $800 first prize in the Open section with 4.5/5. He drew GM Thomas Roussel-Roozmon in the last round.

There was a 4-way tie for second ($175 each): GM Roussel-Roozmon, GM Sambuev, IM Hebert, and expert Louis Robichaud.

                Final standings have been posted:

Still no games available - I may get a stack in the mail in the next few days.
