Warmest congratulations to all involved in making the Canadian Championship such an outstanding success. Hal Bond and his team stepped into fill the breech at the last minute and pulled it off. Bator Sambuev continued his run at the top of Canadian chess and, of course, Eric Hansen established himself as one of Canada's strongest players and a worthy representative at the World Cup. In all, a great achievement. Congratulations to all!
Congratulations on Canadian Championship

Re: Congratulations on Canadian Championship
I'm really confused, did Bator lose the tiebreaks game and how come Victor got the FM title before Morgan Mills? The sadness of missing a zonal :(Shameless self-promotion on display here

My Best Understanding
Hi Bindi:
1. Bator won tie-break - thus the title of Canadian Champion, and the spot on the 2012 Can. Olympiad team. He would have won the right to go to the World Cup as Canada's rep., but for a few reasons, he declined that prize, and so it goes to Eric as runner-up.
2. Morgon couldn't get the FM title because he only had 4/8, since one round he got a " bye ", and that disqualifies him ( though Jonathan Berry is trying to make a determined legal argument based on the FIDE rules that Canada is misinterpreting the FIDE rule on " byes " and titles ).
3. Miladin Djerkovic left the playing hall, not knowing that he had a shot at the FM title. Victor Plotkin apparently, if I understand correctly, did not wish to now play a tie-break match. So Hal has awarded the title to Victor, since he was there to play at the time he was supposed to ( My guessing at the reasoning ).
Everyone can now jump on me for my inaccuracies !

(I assume that he is the same person as in the list.)

The more important question...will the B.C. chess icons such as Jonathan Berry, Lynn Stringer, Mark Dutton, Greg Churchill, Roger Patterson (Keres Memorial?), Ken Jensen etc...visit the Canadian Chess Challenge in Victoria this weekend? Sunday Night is team night...a time for each province to have a good time together...since I am not affiliated with any team (yes...I do have my preferences LOL)...if the icons are showing up...then let's party :)

But regrettably, I will be preoccupied with the Keres. But you should get a pretty good fraction of that list showing up.

Beach Chess Fest Saturday May 21st, 2011 in VICTORIA BC - Re: My Best Understanding

In Victoria -- A Beach Chess Fest was held Saturday, May 21 at Willows Beach in Oak Bay B.C. The Beach Chess Fest included a Sand Castle Competition, skim board demos, other games and of course Chess. Many events are free and are open to all ages. A BBQ will top it all off starting at 5 pm. Buses will take players from the UVIC residences on a scenic tour along the ocean to Willows Beach.
Pictured here is Canada's newest FM Victor Plotkin discussing his last round marathon vs. IM Arthur Calugar with Larry Bevand and myself. Interesting that Victor describes his Canadian championship final round in very different terms than was falsely reported here on ChessTalk (and other inaccurate Blogs) by others after the last round. :)
