General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Re: Canadian Open July 8-17 questions and Answers!
Hi Mark,
I noticed that my game against Kajan won the 1st brilliancy prize in the U2000 section. Just to double check though: does the unfortunate player, (in this case myself) who lost the game get part of the prize or does it solely go to the winner of the game? Thanks.
Dan

Hi Daniel:
All questions about money will have to be directed to Mr. David Cohen (the man signing the cheques) :)
It looks to me like the winner gets the money but please clarify with David on that question about the game.
By the way -- give my best to your father (one of the Kings of Talk radio) :D
Here is a list of the "Brilliancy Prize Winners and games"
Open - Best Games 1st-2nd ($180/game = $90/player)
GM Victor Mikhalevski - IM Artiom Samsonkin
Round 6, Board 2
As for the question from Mr. Zator -- Has a full list of prizewinners been published yet??
NO -- not that I can see -- I listed the website links where you will eventually find this information posted. The last message I saw from David Cohen was posted here....
"I need some rest, and would rather get it right with a small delay than rush to post a list with mistakes. Thanks for your patience."
David Cohen <davidcohen7076400@yahoo.com>
Perhaps you should write to the organizer instead of repeating the same question here on Chesstalk.
Re: Canadian Open July 8-17 questions and Answers!
Thanks Mark. That was my original suspicion but I just wanted to double check. I'll e-mail David about it. And thanks for the kind words about my Dad! He plays as well and was really pleased to hear the arbiter at the Canadian Open is a fan of his.

You are welcome Daniel -- thanks for passing my message to Michael.
For those who can't wait any longer... here is the list....
First I would like to congratulate you on well organized 2011 Canadian Open and updating prize distribution list. :)
I believe there was a specific player missed for Top Under-14 section. Razvan Preotu got 5.0 in Open section, and that is 0.5 higher than, FM Jason Cao and WCM Jackie Peng. :D
With that added Razvan Preotu should receive Top Uner-14 prize and not Jason and Jackie. Please do correct me, if I am wrong.
According to section 16 of CFC handbook "tied winners of place prizes, or tied winners (in the same class) of class prizes, should be awarded all the cash prizes involved, summed and divided equally, but no more than one cash prize (in order of amount) should go into the division for each winner."
4 U14 players had 6 points that means $45 each ($180/4) for U14 prize.
The U2200 prize was $55 so they got it (bigger than $45).
Now what happened with the U14 prize is a different story. Only 2 players were left with 4.5 points so they shared the $180, $90 each
So players with 4.5 points got $90 for U14 prize and players with 5 points got $55 for U2200 prize.
It doesn't look right but it's according to CFC handbook.

I had always understood that what happened in cases like this (where the one group has a choice between their class prize which is smaller and a larger prize but when they claim that it is smaller because of the extra division) is that the money for all the prizes is summed up and divided equally. i.e. $180 U14 prize + U2200 prize split however many ways between the players with 6 points. That way there are no anomalies of the sort you describe. Its also what I am used to seeing in tournaments.

Roger: I agree. I didn't see how many were involved in the U2200 split, but it seems to me that the $180 would have been part of the split prize as per the way I read the rules.
The two players who received $90 would get nothing. When it doesn't seem right, well it's probably not right !!
Fred: The CFC handbook states: "no winner should receive more than one cash award for which he is eligible."
a split from the U2200 prize + a split from the U14 prize = 2 cash awards.
The CFC handbook needs to be updated to cover this situation.

Two cash awards split between 4 players. This is how the rule is meant to be interpreted.
