Re: Canadian Open July 8-17 questions
Some players have it as one of their goals to obtain a FIDE rating and be part of the list of international chess players. There is a growing group of FIDE-rated players below 2000, currently 78.
In Last year's Canadian Open, with half of the players having a FIDE rating, 69 players obtained a provisional rating. But many played enough FIDE-rated opponents but didn't score 1 point against thsoe strong players so those games don't count towards getting a rating.
A player obtains a FIDE rating by firstly, scoring 1 out of 3 aginst FIDE-rated opponents, and then by completing 9 games against FIDE-rated opponents, with a minimum rating performance of 1200. In each tournament they have to play 3 FIDE-rated opponents.
Many of our younger players are getting a FIDE rating from international youth championships. And a few Canadians have played in FIDE-rated tournaments in the US or Europe.
At last year's Canadian Open players could have won an IM norm if their opponents were all FIDE-rated. Playing unrated hurt their chances as their opponents, despite their CFC rating, count as 2050 then 1200.
So this year the already FIDE-rated under 2000 can play in the Open or Under 2000. 29 choose to play up and they will likely play against mostly FIDE-rated opponents, including getting mashed by masters. Those 9 who choose to play in the Under 2000 will have a higher score, but will play mostly unrated-Fide opponents.
As for players who want to get a FIDE rating, the top section offers the most chances, 110 FIDE-rated opponents, providing one can score 1 point (a win or two draws). They are more likely to score 1 point against those FIDE-rated in the U2000 section, but have to play at least 3 of the 9 FIDE-rated players.
For those who have started the process, having 1 of 3 in last year's Canadian Open, they have to play 3 FIDE-rated opponents, but no longer need to score 1.
These players in the Open section will likely have a published FIDE rating after this tournamnent:
Needs 3 more ratable games:
Chidley-Hill, John 2/8 1873
These players likely got the 3 games at CYCC:
Lin, Tony (JunTao) 2.5/8 1909
Miller, David 2.5/8 1776
Chiku-Ratté, Olivier Kenta 3/7 2062
Fan, Brendan 2/6 2080
Needs 5 more ratable games:
Agbabishvili, Lali 1/4 1789 Needs 5 more ratable games.
Needs 6 more ratable games:
Derraugh, Geordie 1.5/3 2182
These players in the U2000 will probably have to play on the top boards to get a FIDE-ratable performance:
Needs 3 more ratable games:
Yang, Yimang 2.5/6 1713 don't know if got 3 from CYCC
Dowling, Bruce 1.5/6 1897
Needs 4 more ratable games:
Poirier, David 1/5 1754
Needs 5 more ratable games:
Stavropoulos, Gregory 1.5/4 1902
Needs 5 more ratable games, but chance may have expired:
Moran-Venegas, Mario 1.5/4 1992
Todd, Adie 1/4 1736
Needs 6 more ratable games:
Zator, Ed 2/3 2119
Jamshed, Musa 1.5/3 2115
Nasir, Zehn 1/3 1965
Beal, Greg 1.5/3 1963
THose in the U2000 need to play 3 of these 9:
Siddeley, Hugh 1982
Haziprodromu, Sam 1964
Leblanc, Paul 1942
Doknjas, John 1931
Solis, Jaime 1919
Renteria, Manuela 1916
Kalaydina, Regina-Veronicka 1842
Renteria, Alejandro 1699
Sly, Doug 1644
If a player only gets 3 here, then he has to get the rest in a future tournament within 2 years of their first ratable event.
I haven't calculated in all those who just played in the FIDE-rated CYCC.
