    The 2011 Canadian Open U 2000 Blog

The Day Prior Arrives! ( Friday, July 8 )

    Welcome Back

Well, the biggest annual Canadian chess tournament, the Canadian Open, snuck up on me pretty fast this year. At my Scarborough Chess Club in Toronto, our last tournament went right down to June 30 – and presto, it’s back into the fray! Round 1 tomorrow at 6:00 PM!

For a number of years now, I have written a Canadian Open U 2000 Blog, about the section I have usually played in, or the prize section that applied. It gets little overall coverage, being buried down in the bowels of the tournament, but the majority of Canadian chess players are “ class “ players, and I have had general encouragement in trying to present my activity and what is happening generally in that part of the tournament. So for 2011, I’m going to again use CMA ChessTalk’s Board as my posting place ( Larry has been most gracious in allowing me to do my thing here year after year ).

    My Prior CO’s

I have to say, that I have thoroughly enjoyed my “ chess holiday “ the prior five outings – lots of chess, good socializing, doing some touristy things, and getting some R&R between rounds. Speaking about “ chess “, how did I do in this prior five years? Well, I did a little digging, and this is what I’ve been able to come up with – it’s a mixed bag - here is my prior 5 CO’s history:

    1. 2006 – Kitchener – Sections - Played in the U 2000 Section ( 1999 to 1600 ) – rated 1711 – finished with 5/9 ( slightly over 50 % ), tied # 21 - # 30 out of 81 players; performance rating of 1832.

    2. 2007 – Ottawa – One Section Swiss ( with hyper-accelerated pairings ) - Was in the U 1800 Class Prize group ( 1999 to 1800 ) – rated 1746 – finished with 5.5/9 ( over 50 % ), tied # 73 - # 113 out of 280 players. Shared a Class Prize – tied for # 3 - # 15 ( the split meant a very modest payoff ! ) – performance rating of 1928.

    3. 2008 – Montreal – Sections - Played up a section in the U 2000 Section ( 1999 to 1800 ) – rated 1783 – finished with 6.5/9 ( 72 % ), tied # 4 - # 8 out of 77 players. Shared some prize money ( again, rather modest due to split ) – performance rating of 1940.

    4. 2009 – Edmonton – One Section Swiss ( no acceleration ) - Was in the U 2000 Class Prize Group ( 1999 to 1800 ) – rated 1831 – finished with 4/9 ( slightly under 50 % ), tied # 110 - # 139, out of 203 players; in my class I finished tied # 30 – # 40 out of 48 players – performance rating of 1797.

    5. 2010 – Toronto – One Section Swiss ( hyper-accelerated pairings ) - Was in the U 2000 Class Prize Group ( 1999 to 1800 ) – rated 1800 ( ranked last of 56 ! ) – finished with 4.5/9 ( 50 % ), tied # 111 - # 150, out of 265 players; in my class, I finished tied # 25 - # 44 out of 56 players – performance rating of 1829.

My Expectations for the 2011 CO

2011 has, so far, not been kind to my chess career. So I face a tougher road than in
prior years. My rating plummeted from above 1800 down into the 1700’s, settling at 1715. And a half year’s work sees me sitting at only 1740, well below my target for 2011 of getting back into the 1800’s. And there are a good crop of 1900’s going for the first prize - one would have to say the winner likely will come from this group, though there may be some dark horses in the 1750 -1899 group:

    # Name ID Rtng Tot Prize

    1 John Doknjas 141225 1997 0.0
    2 Hugh Siddeley 120619 1996 0.0
    3 Stephan Tonakanian 150629 1974 0.0
    4 Jonathan Yu 126131 1971 0.0
    5 Richard Garel 105218 1942 0.0
    6 Paul Leblanc 104186 1924 0.0
    7 Manuela Renteria 152627 1922 0.0
    8 David Poirier 106289 1906 0.0
    9 Ed Zator 105675 1902 0.0
    10 Steve Nickoloff 108201 1872 0.0
    11 Greg Stavropoulos 108628 1872 0.0
    12 Mario Moran-Venegas 143315 1864 0.0
    13 Bruce Dowling 112688 1847 0.0
    14 Sam Haziprodromu 106156 1843 0.0
    15 Nicholas O'Bumsawin 151261 1831 0.0
    16 Pacifico Cortez 149343 1830 0.0
    17 Shafkat Ali 149142 1823 0.0
    18 Mathew G Cooke 126311 1799 0.0
    19 Patrick Yu 143209 1796 0.0
    20 Mark Jubenville 106764 1790 0.0
    21 Greg Beal 101490 1777 0.0
    22 Patrick O'Sullivan 149300 1758 0.0

So I will definitely have to play better than I have in the first half of 2011, if I am to
have any chances of ending with a decent score – my goal, if not too unrealistic, is 5.5/9 pts.. We’ll see if I can handle that.

    My Rd. 1 Pairing

I am ranked # 24 out of 67 ( as of July 7 ), and so expect to be paired down in the first round.

    My Blog Plan

I hope to report on each day, in the wee hours of the next morning, before crashing ( usually I’m still pretty wound up by the time I get home, and so not ready to go right to bed anyway ). However July 11 & 12 are a bit more of a challenge, since I am at the CFC AGM ( I am a CFC Governor ) from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM before the round ( might be a bit more tired those nights! ).

    Responses

I would invite everyone to join in on my blog, with comments and questions. Additions from others in the U 2000 section would be especially welcome. Hopefully it will be a fun 9 days, including the blogging!

    Hi Bob

This would be a great chance for you(or someone) to capture the atmosphere on video for YouTube or chess.ca promotion of chess as an activity. Tons of pics at least absolutely essential.

      U 2000 Video?

      Hi Michael:

Great suggestion - videoing of the U 2000 crowd would be great - but I'm afraid I am rather limited in the new tecnologies. I will need a volunteer to do it for CFC. Anyone willing, if and when they could make it over to the site?

We could then put it onto the new CFC Website under the video tab, as part of CFC's chess promotion mandate.

        Hi Bob

I was thinking bigger. CFC needs a video(s) of the whole event...and the fun stuff after...capture a bit of the lectures/simuls analysis...get interviews with participants and anyone in the target demographic for joining the CFC.

This will be a perfect tool to present chess to potential sponsors/advertisers people who have not had a tournament experience etc

Re: The 2011 Canadian Open U 2000 Blog

          Hi Michael:

A good suggestion - and it is a good project for me as CFC Public Relations Coordinator ( but not as U 2000 Blogger ).

However, to do what you suggest is likely getting into the area of needing someone professional to do it, so it is presentable to sponsors. So far, I have not had money set aside in the 2011-2 budget, which is coming to the AGM for approval, for media promotion. So unless we get an experienced volunteer, I think it will not happen this time.

But I will work on your idea for future, and try to get some $$ set aside just for this purpose.

Is a playing hall included in the "event rooms"?

                  Rd. 1 – Saturday, July 9

                  Rd. 1 – Saturday, July 9

Starting Off Right – The Wee Hours of the Morning of the Day Prior ( July 8 )

In the early morning on Friday, I drafted and posted my first Blog entry on “ The Day Prior! ( July 8 ) “. I noted that within 8 hrs., it had over 125 views. I hope the people reading it enjoyed it, and that they will both find informative and enjoyable, this and my future installments.
As well, as CFC Public Relations Coordinator, I did the “ CFC Regular Chess Post “ on the Open, and as Cooperative Chess Coalition Coordinator, I did their weekly “ The CCC Post “. I also have a personal Facebook page, and did a post there. Whew! A very full couple of hours before hitting the sack.

                  Later that Morning

I ended up going to bed about 2:00 AM, and woke up at 6:30 AM ( not unusual - my CO sleeping most nights is only about 4 hrs., given my past CO’s ). Then I had to drive my wife to our Meaford farm/swamp, about 3 hrs. away – she hightails it to the farm for a week when I do my CO chess holiday thing. Got there to find lightning had taken down our 50 year old, 40 ft. white pine tree ( lucky it didn’t fall on the roof ) - sad. I took a short break there and then turned right around and drove back.

                  The Evening of July 8

In the early evening, I took a rest break, and then started preparing a partial first draft of today’s Rd. 1 blog, to be finished early today after the round, and posted. The rest of the evening was leisurely. I am the Scarborough Chess Club ( SCC ) Database Administrator, and spent a few hours entering games from our last tournament ( always surprised at how good some of the U 1700 junior games are )..

The Big Day Arrives – Rd. 1, July 9

I got more sleep than usual for my CO holidays – a full 5 ½ hours! Nothing much to do in the AM – monitored some chess websites, checked to see if the pairings had yet been posted on the MonRoi live game broadcasting site ( not yet ), did a bit of CFC volunteer time as Public Relations Coordinator, and entered more of the SCC tournament games. It was posted in the afternoon that the pre-registrations were at 268 ( last year’s total was 265 )! The final total came out at 276!

                  A Relaxing CO Afternoon

I’m also the editor of the SCC newsletter, and so spent some time in the afternoon on the draft of the next issue, due out on the 15th. I was going to try, with the instructions, to program my new digital clock but the subconscious took over and I ended up with insufficient time! – need to find some 7 year old at the Open to teach me. LOL . I left for the playing hall at 4:00 PM – it takes about an hour from my place to the Westin Harbour Castle, by public transit. When I arrived there, I confirmed my registration, got a souvenir T-shirt, and socialized with a number of chess friends before the opening ceremony and Rd. 1 @ 6:00 PM.

                  The U 2000 Group ( 72 players ) & Rd. 1

                  Here are the favourites ( 1900 & Over : 11 ), and the “ dark horses “ ( 1750 – 1899 : 14 ) and who won:

                  24 Greg Beal 101490 1777 - 1
                  25 Patrick O'Sullivan 149300 1758 - 1

Out of the 72 players in our group, 27 got the full point in Rd. 1 ( 10 from U 1750 ).

                  In Rd. 1, I played black against junior Eric Song ( 1448 ). I drew - leaves me with ½ pt. ( 50% ).

                  My Round 1 Game

It was a Pirc ( I played Black ), and by the middle game I had a “ winning “ advantage. Then I went up a P. But I failed to find the best moves, Eric defended adequately, and he eventually got back the P, and we each had a passed P. Eric offered me the draw, and at that point I thought I actually stood worse, and so was happy to accept. My game will be posted later today on the chess website, Chess5: www.chess5.com .

                  After the Rd. 1

Since my wife is away, and since, due to some nightmare renovations, we now have a small guest room and bathroom in the basement, I invited a chess friend of mine from out of town, who’s playing in the same section as me, Mario Moran-Venegas, to stay over for the tournament. So we met after the round, and headed home by transit. I got Mario settled, we analyzed our games together ( he won ), and then I sat down to finish this round 1 blog, to post it early today.

                  My Round 2 Game Today ( July 10 ):

As a result of my Rd. 1 draw, I have been paired down again, having 1/2 pt. Here is my Rd. 2 pairing for later today:

                  Bd. 95 Robert J Armstrong (1740) - Alejandro Renteria (1465)

                  Invitation.

Finally, I'd like again to invite everyone to join into the discussion - any comments, suggestions, questions, criticisms of the blog are welcome - and of anything to do with the Can. Open. I will try to respond if that seems appropriate. Any comments from other members of the U 2000 section would be especially welcome!

                  Bob

                      Hi Michael:

The organizer has taken absolute control of all media under their bid ( which CFC accepted ) - they have MonRoi as their sole contracted press agent, taking photos, etc. I don't believe there is yet any agreement as to what might be given to CFC later, for its own chess promotion activities.

                          Hi Michael:

I would have to say that chess promotion photography in those areas by the CFC might well be disputed by the organizer ( though I believe that the organizing committee would be overstepping their contractual authority if they did so ) - just a personal opinion.

Best for an exec. to give a formal answer.

Someone has just posted a rd1 photo so I don't see what the problems is. I am not asking for the MOnroi transmissions of games and whatnots, Just looking for stuff for promotional material for the website-to promote chess, fun and ultimately joining the CFC. I am rather baffled by the situation here as big $s were spent on the site and the CFC cannot use its premier event to promote chess. Huh?? what gives?

Oh and if you have a few moments in the AGM can you ask each of the Presidential candidates
(a)what they have in mind as the strategic plan for CFC in the next operating cycle
(b)What market segments they would like to focus on(related to (a))
                            (c) and by what means they intend to do so

I trust the future leader of the CFC has some ideas on this matter. I dont even care if you tell them the question(s) in advance so they can think it over first.

                              My Round 1 Game

It was a Pirc ( I played Black ), against junior Eric Song ( 1448 - also a member of my Scarborough CC ). By the middle game I had a “ winning “ advantage. Then I went up a P. But I failed to find the best moves, Eric defended adequately, and he eventually got back the P, and we each had a passed P. Eric offered me the draw, and at that point I thought I actually stood worse, and so was happy to accept.
