General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
What happened to BGC RR # 117 ( the 10-player RR ) ??? You said to me two weeks ago you were going to deem the outstanding games of the tournament " unplayed " and were sending in the tournament for rating. Here it is two updates later ( Oct. 1 has been done ) and no tournament submitted.
Not great when the last round was played August 19 !!:(
I'm sure I'm not the only player/ club member who had expected it to be rated some time ago.
Been let out of the dungeon long enough to write this post.I
I'd say the quality of Chesstalk has diminished since the new format change which coincided with the re-introduction of the CFC Discussion group, which I considered unneccesary, other than the Governors section.
Very few voices on the new Chesstalk with a handful predominating.

I think you've said that before. I don't know exactly what it is that you want. If you didn't want to read a thread on who should be banned from Chess Talk you wouldn't have clicked on it.
There are people who entertain and people who like to be entertained. To find out what's entertaining the views of the topics and number of posts they contain should give a fair idea.
Vlad, for all that he put me on such a crummy list with a bunch of right wing incompetents and one chess patser, is an entertainer.
If you want to write about something why not start a topic?
I would never vote to ban Gary Rubin. He would have understood the reason his name is on the list once the voting appeared! Unfortunately posting a poll seems to be beyond my level of computerese and my work got posted inadvertently without the voting option:(
If you banned Gary Ruben from Chess Talk, both the quality and the number of posts would go up.
I don't think it has much to do with the new format. But it's no longer a place where you can discuss chess, much less anything serious.
Hi Bruce,
I notice Vlad spelled your first name wrong in his post.
Let's get past that though and look at your contention we can't discuss chess. I was willing to seriously discuss the weakness of the French Winawer. It quickly turned into a joke when certain people got more interested in ridiculing than looking at lines and so forth. Maybe that rings a bell with you.
Is also became impossible to seriously discuss the weakness of the Sicilian 4. ... a6 variation.
It's not that people can't or won't discuss chess here. The problem is that it's not worth the aggrevation. People who don't have the ability to supply analysis simply ridicule with blanket statements.
I think you should be banned. You seem to have an unhealty preoccupation with me judging by how often your write my name. As a test, how often do I drag your name into discussions?

Joke: What's the difference between Ben Daswani and Gary Ruben?
Answer: Ben Daswani is rated over 2000, whereas Gary Ruben is an old man with health problems that could prove to be terminal. OWNED.
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)

Maybe I don't find it funny because nobody is guaranteed tomorrow. A few weeks ago I was at the funeral of a boy who used to live next door. I knew him from when he was a baby. He was under 30 when he passed away. Someone else who writes here also attended the funeral.
There's a young guy down the street I talk to when I walk the dog. He's 21 and not obese but he's recovering from a heart attack.
Being old isn't bad. It's better than the alternative.
