  • Congrats Bindi Cheng for IM norm

As there are 33 foreign players in a Swiss, players don't have to play 3 foreign players, can get the norm playing Canadian GMs and IMs.

    FM Cheng 2385 FIDE

    1985 1 (WCM)
    2032 1
    2528 0 GM
    2071 1
    2217 1 FM
    2611 0.5 GM
    2409 1 IM
    2577 0.5 GM
    18430 titled player
wins last round 7 pts 1640
ties last round 6.5 pts 2126
loses last round 6 pts 2585

So as long as Cheng plays an IM or GM rated 2585 FIDE he gets an IM norm.

GM Mikhalevski 2569, so avg rating 2333 so 6 points gives him IM norm!

    A possible GM norm:

    IM Samsonkin 2378 FIDE

    1978 1
    2092 1
    2200 1
    2483 0.5 IM
    2553 0.5 GM
    2569 1 GM
    2577 0.5 GM
    2425 0.5 IM
    18877 1
If wins last round, 7 points, to get a GM norm, Samsonkin has to defeat a player rated 2543.

GM Bluvshtein is 2611. Avg opponent 2387.56:

9 rounds GM norm IM norm
    7 2380-2433 2230-2283
    6.5 2434-2474 2284-2324
    6 2475-2519 2325-2369
    5.5 2520-2556 2370-2406
    5 2557-2599 2407-2449
    4.5 2600-2642 2450-2492
    4 2643-2679 2493-2529
    3.5 >= 2680 =>2530

IM Gerzhoy's opponents were too weak
    2083 1
    2217 1 FM
    2390 1 IM
    2378 0.5 IM
    2350 1 IM
    2476 0 GM
    2467 0.5 GM
    2295 1
    18656 1 GM
needs to defeat a 2764 GM.

GM Golod 2582, average opponent rating 2359.78.

    Congratulations Bindi!

Erik, you are correct in your assessment of norm possibilities; however you forgot to consider the fact that for norm purposes, players can actually increase the rating of their lowest rated opponent. For GM norm purposes, the rating becomes 2200 and for IM norms its 2050. In either case, for the players that you mentioned it doesn't actually make a difference whether real ratings are used or the lowest rated opponent's rating is increased.

My understanding is that only the first UNRATED player become the minimum. And I did that for Samsonkin's list. The second unrated, if he faced one, would be 1200, destroying norm chances. He would have gotten the GM norm if it was normal accelerated pairings, and played CFC masters in the first few rounds.

I see now that you did that for Samsonkin, but not for Bindi (his 1lowest rated opponent could have been made into 2050). I don't know if accelerated pairings would have made a difference to him, as personally I am not a big fan of it but thats another story.

Low rated players can be raised to 400 below, but I thought only unrateds to 2050?

Bindi drew his last game, but average rating 2233 67 points too low (2290) for a GM norm.

          FM Shiyam Thavandiran 2320 FM
played 3 GMs and 1 IM so doesn't meet requirement of 5 Title Holders. The 3 GMs count as 4.5 IMs, for that's a different requirement.

          1974 1
          2002 1
          2425 0.5 IM
          2111 1
          2476 0 GM
          2086 1
          2571 0 GM
          2246 1
          2528 1 GM
          2268.78 6.5

And he didn't make the rating requirement of 2284.

I consider that FM don't count as a Title Holder, just GM, IM, IWM but I can't cite the regulation where that is spelled out.

I'm pretty sure Bindi got his rating high enough, and that's his 3rd norm as well, so he should be getting the title soon?

Lowest rated opponent can be raised to the level floor (it doesn't matter if they are unrated or just lower rated).

                    Here is the rule:

.46c For the purposes of norms, the minimum rating (adjusted rating floor) for the opponents shall be as follows:

                    Grandmaster 2200
                    International Master 2050
                    Woman Grandmaster 2000
                    Woman International Master 1850

1.46c1 No more than one opponent shall have his rating raised to this adjusted rating floor. Where more than one opponent are below the floor, the rating of the lowest opponents shall be raised.

What's the avg. rating for Shiyam's opponents? Did he get an IM norm as well?

If not, it should be pretty close.

Congratulations to Bindi Cheng -- on achieving his 3rd IM norm at this year's Pinnacle 48th Canadian Open Chess Championship 2011!

With regard to Shiyam Thavandiran, we did the calculations, and he did not quite make the IM norm sorry to report. :(

Shiyam was presented a plaque as the youngest Canadian Junior (for his 2005 victory at the age of 12).

Also congratulations to Aris Marghetis, FA who achieved his 4th IA norm and will Canada's next International Arbiter.

Further, congratulations to Natalia Khoudgarian who got her first FA norm at this year's wonderful event!

If not, it should be pretty close.
The average for Shiyam was 2277 which was just short of the required 2284; Additionally, I think that he only played against 4 (and not 5) titled opponents anyway.

A strange result was by the winner for top Expert.
He took 2 byes, defeated 2 unrateds, then played good enough for an IM norm (if he had scored 5/9).
