General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!

Can we increase the number of seniors with CFC memberships?
Can we increase the number of seniors with CFC memberships?
I put the following initial post of mine on the CFC Governors Private Discussion Board. The question posed might be worth discussing in this public forum too:
"Can we increase the number of seniors with CFC memberships??
This is a question I've been pondering without success for some time, and I am wondering if anyone can come up with any ideas that can be polished and proposed at a meeting of the assembly of governors at some point.
The CMA has been thinking of getting into the seniors 'market', as I learned from Larry Bevand on the old version of chesstalk years ago.
Unlike the CFC, the CMA would have the resources, for example, to send their paid chess instructors into establishments frequented by seniors.
The CFC could try to somehow encourage the organization of more seniors tournaments, but do we have sufficent means? Is a large scale CECC, or Canadian Elders Chess Championships, program feasible?
I rejected the idea of proposing cheaper CFC membership fees for seniors, at least for the time being, if only because the risk of a net revenue loss seems unacceptable given the thin margin that we have at this time."

Re: Can we increase the number of seniors with CFC memberships?
Regarding the Canadian Elders Chess Championships idea, sections could naturally be done either by rating class or possibly even by age (e.g. 60-65, 66-70, 71-75, 76-80, 81-85, 86-90, 91+).
Although there is no World Elders Chess Championships as yet, at least provincial elders championships contests could be staged province by province within Canada, culminating in the national elders championships.

More information needed: e.g. what is the annual death rate of seniors with CFC memberships?; i.e. what is the break even threshold?

Kevin, I think the word "Senior" is more commonly used and preferred to "Elder".
And yes you must know that there is a Canadian Seniors Championship that has been started by Hal and is held on the long weekend in Aug. If this became popular, I'm sure it could be taken on as a regular CFC program.
The World Senior's Championship has been held for many years. It is held every fall somewhere in Europe (usually at a resort type of place). I believe they are proposing splitting it into 2 concurrent age groups now (60-69 and 70+).
Re: Can we increase the number of seniors with CFC memberships?
Peter, I stopped going to the local seniors club a number of years ago. The death rate was discouraging.
I recall one guy who liked to play the piano. Old time music. One evening he was playing and him and I were singing. An old Jolson song amongst others. "Oh how we danced on the night we were wed. I needed a wife like a hole in the head." Never saw him again but we sure enjoyed that session.

Yes, I knew about most of that Fred. I was suggesting a seperate Canadian Elders Chess Championships, like there is a CYCC, since 'Youth' is used in place of 'Junior' to avoid confusion with the Junior Championship, and I similarly wanted 'Elders' in place of 'Senior' to avoid confusion with the Senior Championship. I thought that would be clear.
If you can suggest a different synonym for 'Seniors' than 'Elders' that can be used, I'm all ears. In any case, it's nice to see there is a proposal to split the World Senior's Championship into two groups. Maybe the Canadian Seniors Championship organizers might follow suit at some point, especially if the idea of a CECC is deemed impractical.

The lyrics I heard were:
"Oh how we danced on the night we were wed.
We danced all night long 'cause the room had no bed."

People have had a lot of fun with that song over the decades. Sometimes I listen to my old records. Still like to listen to Glen Miller and the big band.
Re: Can we increase the number of seniors with CFC memberships?
:) Reminds me of an old joke about Baptists:
Q: Why are Baptists opposed to premarital sex?
A: They're afraid it will lead to dancing.

Now being 50, I would have used to be able to qualify for seniors chess in some previous events that were CFC rated. Now for the seniors championship, at least, the starting age is 60. I think FIDE may have made a mistake in setting the minimum age at 60 for the World Senior CC; they're cutting down on their turnout quite possibly, and perhaps making it slightly harder to make a large number of sections for the event if they wished to.
Personally I'd love for the CFC to give seniors (of whatever minimum age the CFC would set) a break on their CFC membership fee, if I thought that Governors wouldn't overwhelmingly reject the idea as risking too much revenue loss at the moment.
