I would think it would be more usual, and sufficent, to use the highest title earned. It should go without saying someone who has made IM or GM is also a national master. Unfortunately, I don't see an IM or GM norm listed as giving a player a national master title, and it should.

Is a National Master title equal to greater than or less than a Fide Master title? I don't know.

Nothing is perfect at the start.

We have lists of IM's and GM's elsewhere on the website (see Who's Who).

I would think that any existing FM would easily qualify for the new NM title.

What would have been nice is if FIDE and national titles were actually listed along with the players information. So, when you pull up a players info, it is there for everyone to see. Just a thought.

I would hope that most class E titleholders would be motivated to try for the class D title and then the class C title and so on.

The CFC website now lists people who have achieved the NM title under my watch as CFC Masters Representative.

To the list of National Master title recipients should be added the name of Ilia Bluvshtein of Ontario.

What would have been nice is if FIDE and national titles were actually listed along with the players information. So, when you pull up a players info, it is there for everyone to see. Just a thought.

Due to an overwhelming response we will be delaying launch of the title system until November 1st, 2011. By then we will have a program in place to generate a list of players in every rating class who have met the requirements for that class title, which will then be added to the website. At that point you can request certificates from the CFC office which will be available for a nominal charge of $10 (plus HST I presume) for all rating classes up to Candidate Master. National Master certificates will be free. You don't have to apply for a certificate if you don't want or need a piece of paper to document your achievement because it should be there for all to see on the CFC website.

I still want to hear from people who have received National Master certificates already or who have qualified under the old program so that they can be added to the list on the website as shown in the Michael von Keitz post quoted in the original post of this thread.

I believe that the CFC policy is to grandfather NM title requests under the old rules for individuals who have already begun a run on the 25 games with a rating over 2200 as long as they don't drop below the 2200 mark before achieving the title the old way. Most people who qualify by the old method would also qualify by the new method though norms are only possible for tournaments of five or more games under the new system. This is a bit problematic in Windsor because most of our tournaments are four rounds but I am sure that we will adjust to the new requirement.

As some of you may be aware, the rules pertaining to the achievement of the NM title have recently changed; however, we are currently trying to catch those that qualified for and/or received their certification under the old rule:

738. CFC Life Masters. The CFC will issue a "Certificate of Chess Master" for each player who achieves a CFC rating of 2200 or above for 24 consecutive regular tournament games. Players who have achieved this performance in the past can request their certificate from the CFC business office, by providing satisfactory evidence of their performance to the CFC business office. [see Motion 2003-01; 02-03GL3, December 2002]
