General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I would love to at least get a look at them. Since I am in Montreal, the best idea would be to leave them at the Strategy store on Mt. Pleasant, and Larry Bevand can bring them back to Montreal the next time he's in Toronto. Of course - if anyone in the Toronto area wants them first - go ahead.
When I'm done, I could give them to the Scarborough CC (or some other worthy archival site).
OK, that sounds good. I'll get into the City at some point and drop them off there for you. If I just walk in and say this is for Hugh, they'll now who you are???
I should likely be attending Hal's tournament to either watch or play in Guelph this weekend at Guelph University centre, room 442 (directly inside the Greyhound bus loop). Is anyone from the Hamilton or Burlington or Mississauga area that might live nearby a chess club that is going that might be willing to either drop any original scoresheets off at Hal's desk or meet up (in the case that I may have to skip a round or day)?
It seems to be a good idea to have the games of a former city champion to study (he seems to be about expert class, based on his rating) in the future, & the SWOCL services seem to have appreciated the ability to share those games with the archival committees such as Hugh Brodie & other sites in the past.
If you also had any spare or rare chess books that you said might toss out, then perhaps first approach a library to see whether any of the older looking ones look rare. Alternately, if you ask a group of 40-60 players at a tournament such as Hal's, then you might even be able to sell/donate a box of chess books for a couple of $$$. A book dealer that also specializes in chess sales might also be there, & he might be interested in knowing what to do with those types of things (trophies, books, equipment, etc).
Please also see http://www.chesstalk.info/forum/showthread.php?t=5825 for some details about that tournament: http://www.bing.com/maps/#JnNzPXlwLm...A5MjYxNTYwNDQ= (sort of the "corner" of S Ring road & Evergreen drive; after 10am - 6pm both days would be the schedule; can take an elevator up that comes out near to the tournament hall - the building is the one that appears to be furthest away from the entry point to the loop, pointing northerly). Hopefully this approach could save you the cost of having to mail any scoresheets to Quebec for any sort of processing.
Let's also give Mr. Bevand's services a great recommendation for other purchases of equipment, books, clocks & scorebooks, since many players in the area also probably compare Strategy Games' deals compared to other collectors.
... I'm sorry I'm a bit confused because I don't know all you people!! LOL
Who is Hal? Do you want me to give these to you, and then they can make their way to Hugh in Montreal?? Matters not to me, I'd just like them to go somewhere where they'll be used / learned from. There are a LOT of sheets!!
I don't mind driving to the store on Mt Pleasant at some point either.
I don't want to see the books, but I'd gladly donate them if someone could use them. Again, there are a lot of them.
I will be driving to Mums on Thurs and and then home on Friday. I coud stop by Friday on my way through and drop them to you. Message me your address if that's ok. And a contact phone. My cell is 905.617,7745
