  • cfc member activity 2001-2011

    some time ago, I posted number of games played by people in the period (approx) 2006-2010. I have had occasion to revisit this and now have some numbers for the period mid 2001-mid(late) 2011 or roughly a decade.

    As before there are some cavaets: people at the start of the period with established ratings were considered to be at 26 games played - so these numbers are not quite exact.

    Some other information:
    - of people with at least 100 regular games played, 39% of them had established active ratings. (i.e. 61% had <=25 active games)

    - of the players counted, 72% of them played less than 25 games in this period.

    - of the players counted, 86% of them played less than 50 games in this period.

    A graph and list of the top 20 or so is given below. (I came in at #39 :-) ) If you want the whole Excel file it is at: http://www.victoriachess.com/cfc/dat...2001-2011.xlsx

    With the CFC giving away certificates for classes maybe there should also be certificates for number of rated games, and lists published on the website:

    Bronze 100 rated games
    Silver 500 rated games
    Gold 1,000 rated games

    When a player reaches 500 or 1,000 an announcement with photo and bio could be published in the newsletter. It is a great accomplishment.

      The curve is not very smooth What is a bin size for played games? IMHO, the bar plot might be better with a larger bin size (number of games 10 or 25). An additional curve N_players who played more than X games (smth like an integral of the posted plot.) Thnx.

        I think there was a similar tradition for the most active player's photo on the title page.

            Hmmmm... at least one data point is wrong. The spreadsheet lists me as having played 46 games between 2001 and 2011. I've only played 20 CFC rated games, in a total of three events, during that time.

            Are you counting some events multiple times?

              As stated in the original post what I actually calculated was the number of games played with players with established ratings started at 26. So in your case, being established in 2001 and playing 20 games: 20+26 = 46.

              That may seem a little obscure, but for my purposes that was the number I needed, not the actual numbers of games played. Some one who was not established in 2001 has the exact number of games.

                Thanks for the work and chart, Roger!

                Maybe something like ...
                BinSize = min (x, 10 * int (GamesPlayed / 100))
                so x, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 ....

                x might be as small as 1.

                It's already a log graph on the vertical axis. Sure glad I'm not a statistician.

                Or maybe
                BinSize = min (1, 5 * int (GamesPlayed / 30))

                so 1, 5, 10, ... Yes, I like this second formula better. Good luck!

                  Sorry - missed that.

                  After a few days reflection I'm still blown away by the number of rated games some folks have played. Micah Hughey, e.g., has been averaging about 2 games per week, FOR A DECADE! What dedication (and obvious love for the game).

                  I second Eric Malmsten's suggestion: it would be worthwhile to formally celebrate those who play so much.

                  I'm curious - who has Micah played the most?

                    yes, although a great deal depends on where you live. When I lived in ottawa, it was pretty easy to get 40 or so games at the club (once a week more or less) plus a tournament 6-8 times a year or about 70-90 games a year. Now, in Victoria, it is pretty much impossible to play that many. 25 games in a year is a good year (although I typically get another 20 or so in the US). I think my lifetime total is probably pushing 3000.

                    And of course to those totals, impressive as they are, you should add USCF and FIDE games outside the country.

                      I am sure that I would be up there but also guys like Jason Wihnon and Rob Gardner could be candidates.

                        Dave Ottosen also played him many times before he left town. I've probably played Micah around 10 times in tournament games and I don't play that often.

                          I'm bumping this thread because I just noticed it. I certainly have a great love for the game. But dedication? After getting married two years ago, and with a kid on the way, I've cut down to only one game a week, maybe one-and-a-half. Plus a few rapid games on Mondays, of course, but those don't count. And some casual games at the library downtown this afternoon. Plus blitz, but that's less than twenty games a week.
                          My wife Leah has joined the Edmonton Chess Club, plays about 30 games a year, and is starting to Organize tournaments too. So that might help me to get back to a respectable number of games per year again, like the old days of the early 2000's.
