General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I think you're misunderstanding. I was fine with Bob going out of his way to ask about my expired membership. However, I am a little disappointed to hear that Bob doesn't have any intention to encourage CFC membership at the Mississauga club. My assumption that he would based on my experience seems to have been premature.
Now you speaking in a very nice tone. First you are mad now you are OK with him. It little confusing for the rest of us! :p
Maybe Mr. Gillanders will buy you lunch, you guys will settle all the differences, while sharing Happy Meal together! :D

I was never mad with him. We don't see eye to eye on the Occupy Wall Street issue but that doesn't mean I'm mad at him. Although what the relation is between encouraging CFC membership and our differing views on Occupying Wall Street is not entirley clear to me. However, I don't think Bob would want to eat at McDonald's and support a major corporation. I would therefore be happy to have lunch with him at a mom-and-pop restaurant of his chosing. However, I don't think that will put us on the same page visa vie the Occupy Wall Street movement as neither of us would give up our viewpoints just for the sake of a nice light snack. :):) Unfortunately this won't be possible for at least 6 months as I'm going to have to make due with French cuisine for the foreseeable future instead of North American fast food.

I was also thinking that since Bob is an important chess organizer in the area that this boded well for CFC membership for example at the Mississauga club.
For all that I like prodding Bob about memberships, I think it's great he has so many kids interested in chess. A good learning experience and maybe one day some of them will join.
It gives a whole new meaning to the term Kindergarden Chess. Kindergarden Chess is where you make a move and your opponent busts you on the next move.

This is not a ‘Occupy Wall Street’ thread. There is a separate thread dedicated to that topic.
Your first 2 posts indicate completely different picture!
You take my first two posts asking if he's going to have a CFC membership drive at the Mississauga club as my being mad at him? I'm sure Bob is not angry at me for asking. Increased CFC membership is something I think we can all support and if not for the fact that I'm going overseas shortly I would be renewing as I have for some years.

Trying to force? Asking someone to join or renew after you check and find their membership expired as you asked me is not forcing anyone. Heck I don't even belong to your club and you managed to raise the issue with me - how much easier with the people at your club.
I don't think you are taking about CFC membership drive here. :p

Yes, I agree with you on this point, unfortunately there is no big movement on that front either. :D
Of course I'm talking about a membership drive there, I'm respsonding to Bob's comment that you can't force anyone to join the CFC.
There is actually a bit of a movemement on that front as the CFC has been having emails sent to past members and Bob has been checking if memberships are current and has asked at least one person on Chesstalk if they want to renew ie myself.
Can you tell us why the CMA would not be a good fit for your clientele :)
Larry
Hi Larry,
I just love these leading questions!
To be clear, I am quite happy to see our junior members involved in either CFC or CMA events. When I visited your big CMA event in Toronto earlier this year, I was delighted to see lots of our juniors participating. When our juniors organized a team to compete at the CFC team event in Kitchener this year, fantastic. When three of our juniors competed at the WYCC, we were very proud.
Years ago we identified a need to attract new junior members to the club, so we began our junior club. Ever since we began emphasizing fun above all else, the numbers have climbed steadily. The kids want to have fun!
The stronger kids have been graduating to the adult club and to tournament play (CFC and CMA). We have happy parents, a good volunteer crew, and the kids are having fun. As they say, don’t fix it if it isn’t broken.
Maybe CFC can't force joining/renewals, but we can certainly ENTICE them with the fact that CFC has been running like a well-oiled machine over the last 1 1/2 years.
Of course, we do have to admit to some divided successes :
1. all 2012 National Championships onstream;
2. new website ( though we are having problems with a crashing problem; but it is functional, gives the required info, and is easy to navigate )
3. the Can. WYCC team got to Brazil and back with little complaints it seems ( the Dora Liu situation was clearly and consistently handled, though all agree it was unfortunate that Dora was a casualty );
4. in the black for 2 years running, and interim financials show us staying in the black this year;
5. full, functioning CFC executive for the first time in a few years.
6. quarterly on-line meetings being adequately attended by the majority of governors, with much better attendance than in the GL Motions era ( though attendance being higher would be better ).
7. New member service of providing CFC " Class " certificates, for differing levels of skill, from national master down to " E " Class.
8. Active participation in FIDE by our FIDE Rep., Hal Bond.
9. The most successful CYCC ever in terms of numbers, with great credit to the chief organizer, Anna Jin, and her organizing committee ( though we did have the surplus distribution difficulty ).
There are likely other things that could be mentioned.
I just think it is necessary to try to balance what may be legitimate criticisms of CFC, with the positive elements, so the picture of CFC is not wrongly slanted. There are good reasons to join/renew with the CFC.

Hi Bob,
You are doing excellent work and...I like your reponse :)!
produced by Jeff Coakley 5 times a year...can I send you our stuff and will you distribute it to your youngsters...I may slip in a flyer on the chess lessons for kids we are offering in the region :).
The next mag should appear on our site on or around Dec 15 2011 :)
CFC has been running like a well-oiled machine over the last 1 1/2 years.
Not sure about 'well oiled machine' part, but it was running. :D
Actually it is not even close to well oil machine, no matter what people at CFC office think.
I do agree, that for a small period of time CFC was doing quite well. Unfortunately those people are not longer in the office to keep it running at that speed.
2. new website ( though we are having problems with a crashing problem; but it is functional, gives the required info, and is easy to navigate )
I prefer the old site much better. New site has same functionality as an old website. Old site had rating calculator, which I really miss. New site does have a different skin.
( the Dora Liu situation was clearly and consistently handled,
If, by this you mean discriminating talented kids, not demonstrating to our chess community that CFC Executives are here to encourage kids compete at International chess events without intervention of CFC officials. In this case, I completely agree, that it was consistently handled by CFC. They did a perfect job.
CFC failed BIG in this department and CFC Executives should receive certificate 'F' for its accomplishment. Original founders of CFC would be ashamed and shocked of current CFC Executives and I would not blame them.
though we did have the surplus distribution difficulty ).
Perhaps Mr. Barron explain to us how this happened.
There are likely other things that I could also mention, but my post will get to long.
This shows that CFC is not a well oiled machine. It is far away from reaching this goal. If we had more people, that were with CFC months ago, CFC definitely will be on the right track.
All I see is bolts are getting rusty, oil needs changing. Basically this oil-machine' needs a lot of work. It remains to be seen, if it can reach 'well oil-machine' in a future.
