What ever happened to those classic Canadian Junior Championships of old?

I would gladly organize this event and find the necessary sponsorship in 2012-2013 as an invitational with the best Canadian Juniors taking part.

Here is a list of the top 30 Canadian Juniors today (taken from the CFC site: www.chess.ca)

    1 Kovalyov, Anton Verdun, QC 2654 2011-07-30

If you compare the two lists...ummm...it looks like some strong players (who are taking part in the junior in 2 days) are missing from the CFC list...is it a birthday thing as of Jan 1?

Larry I`m sure any such tournament bid would be looked upon very favourably.

A few of the registered players are a bit delinquent in their memberships. They show up when you expand your search to include expired members.

      Hi Fred,

      Great!

This is not an empty offer...it is a true attempt to bring this event back to an event which Canadian Juniors work hard to qualify for!

Something special...not related to dollars but TOTALLY RELATED TO SKILL!

Do I send the bid to you?

Are there minimum requirements and obligations?

I am sure it is on your website somewhere...but save me the scrolling :)

      Thanks!

It's probably because it's held in Alberta. Most of the juniors that you have on the list are from Ontario and probably can't afford going there.

            starting at 1051. Frequency.

The main discrepancy is your RR vs Swiss. Swiss might attract more players and thus generate more entry fees >> more CAD for travel to the WJCC. A solid sponsorship might kill this argument.
Another advantage of swiss - almost everybody can play. The RR might eliminate some provinces in principal (an example by placing a rating floor ~2350 as a mark of the strong (best) player)

You should consider the 2013 championship. (2012 starts soon). While the beginning might be after 2012 Christmas or some other convenient days for students.

Anyway - rules are made to break or walk-around :)

+ consider the girls championship too.

Once the junior championship was in Toronto (I think ~15 players and not the strongest). The last year in Mississauga (the closest mega-city to Toronto) - still not many players. (Anyway both tournaments were different financially compared to the Calgary event.)

That statement likely is always true in the general form: "... because the tournament is in X and all the people who aren't from Province(X) cannot afford to go there ..."

This is a built-in problem primarily created by geographic and economic terms and requires creative solutions. Every National level tournament in Canada will have this issue.

                  Larry
Almost no chess events in Canada truly are based on skills alone. Even the Chess Challenge puts province of residence at a premium to skills. When the Canadian Closed was opened up considerably, there were a lot of arguments trying to prevent skillful young local players from playing, but at the same time weaker players from out of province were invited no questions asked. It doesn't matter that the logic/rules don't make sense, people are inherently political and in general overvalue their own local players.

More important issues for Juniors are things like real training camps, help creating subsidized coaching resources for the right players, and making all chess events more practical for those players. When my daughter was involved, it was a constant fight to get any respect as a player, and trying to gain that respect by travelling was time consuming and entirely impractical. No futurities ( ever, despite 4 WYCC events and 2 Olympiads ) and the prospect of beating Noritsyn ( never happened ) or Thavandiran ( 50% ) in order to supposably be a player.

Bottom line, the system sucks, and I'm not sure that pursueing chess in Canada is worthwhile for any youngster. Those of you in the business of junior chess have to do a better job. I have the upmost respect for those parents and players trying to make it regardless, but I'm thinking taking on another sport or academic endeavour is a better use of that energy given the current Canadian chess envoronment. Go to a few CYCC events or maybe one WYCC and have fun with it, and blow off all these chess players/pundits/critics who put their own standards of playing excellence on others and generally harrass those trying to make a go of it.

I think its obvious that holding a Canadian Junior AND a CYCC isn't practical given actual resources in Canada. One will always suffer to the other in certain portions. Holding one event is a better solution.

I am not sure I follow your reasons for conflating the two events (except for the obvious fact that they both target similar age groups). As I said, all national level events in such a large country will encounter these problems.

One solution that can work would be to seek sponsorship to allow regional qualifiers to afford to go to the National tournament. Given the difficulty usually encountered getting sponsorship for any chess activity, it might take some time for this model to take wing. On the other hand, sponsoring activities for children (or youths, or whatever...) is something that is often more appealing than sponsoring adults, so perhaps there is a chance.
