I didn't know that CFC is now giving FIDE titles away now, without FIDE's approval! Motion was probably passed at AGM meeting. :p

Some other sources say he is even a GM. ;)

    FIDE card states otherwise: http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=2805391

      Updated Pre-Registered List

The pre-registered list is up to 51 now!

Please find the full list in the 3rd thread. There are 14 players in the open, 17 in the U2000 and 20 in the U1700.

I remember the golden days of the KW Open when a 4 foot tall Arthur Calugar was giving Robert Hamilton a tough time. Is there another future IM in the works?

Please sign up and help us reach 70 players!

Players commuting might wish to know that GO transit now has a GO train to the site (within a few blocks distance of city hall) a couple of times on weekdays, as well as those new buses introduced last year. Don't forget about a Sunday morning change in the daylight savings time that weekend.

          Storylines

The 15-player Open Section is headed by rising star Michael Kleinman and veteran blindfold expert Hans Jung. Can they fend off the challenge of the likes of WYCC U12 medalist Michael Song and former Botswana wonderkid Oanthata Pelekekae? Who will have his name engraved on the KW Commemorative Trophy?

The U2000 Section, with 20 players, is headed by an amazing 3 players rated 1961! Stuart Brammall, Rob Gashgarian and Mahmud Hassain will all be looking to prove who truly is the 1961-rated player. Also, will there be a much-anticipated clash between Bob Gillanders and the Amazing Tim?

The U1700 Section is the largest, with 23 players. It is headed by Class B player Jeffrey Xu, and includes familiar names such as Kai Gauer and James Williamson.

Chess players are flooding up your tourney. Great job of promoting! You already surpassed your forecasted numbers of 40 players by 150% to 60 players. How will the prize funds distributed based on the current pre-registered list of 60 players? Will the prizes increase or remain as advertised?

I remember an Ontario Open in Ottawa many moons ago. There were 60 advance entries, but much against expectation, a further 100 (or was it 120?) registered at the door. Good luck!

                  Hi Mark,

As you can see, we have 61 players at present. With the number of juniors and pre-registration discounts, prizes are amazingly still at over 100% of entries!

From my understanding, there is the potential for a top-up above the guarantees. However, the actual finances will be completed by the committee after the first few rounds.

                  Would you like to pre-register?

The 2004 Ontario Open in Brantford had 80 pre-registered, and 54 more showed up at the door, despite a steep discount for early registration ($60 vs $100). First round was over an hour late, partly to clear the registration backlog and put out more sets, and partly because the pairing software at the time was not very stable and we had to re-pair the round a couple of times.

Looking at your advertised prize funds, let's say, the actual number of players*
showed up is 41 which is above the minimum of 40, my understanding is that your advertised prize funds should already be unconditionally guaranteed since it already met your minimum of 40 players. But, if you compute your total prize fund for all the sections, that's already $2,200. Without discounts for 41 regular players of your entry of $50, that totals only $2050. You already have a $150 deficit or even more if you apply discounts. Who are going to cover up for your deficits, rentals and other fees? I guess, you must have some typo in your prize funds advertisement based on minimum of 40 players unless you have sponsors to cover these expenses for you. I highly recommend to factor all your tournament expenses before coming up with the minimum poll of players requirements and advertising very attractive prize funds to avoid risk of losing your money. With a pre-registered player of over 60. You should be safe though i guess if everyone shows up.

                          Hi Christopher,

It says under the CFC database that you are from Kitchener, Ontario. Surely, you wouldn't miss out on the KW Winter Open's return to its golden days?

Unfortunately, I teach private music lessons on Saturdays so the event doesn't work for me. I'll stop in and say "Hi" on Sunday though.

It was circa 1980, when the effects of the Fischer boom worked their final magic in Canada and CFC membership reached a peak. Canada, not always in tune with the USA. With the 100 (or was it 120?) entries at the door, the (manual) pairings for round 1 were an hour late.
