Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Super GM Alexei Shirov came and conquered at Ottawa's RA Chess Club last night. Mr Shirov took on 20 of the capital's best in a simultaneous exhibition. He won 19 games and surrendered just one draw to the indefatigable Saied Sadeghi---who has also drawn him on both of Mr Shirov's two previous visits to Ottawa. (A truly remarkable record, Saied.:D)
Tonight, Mr Shirov holds a simultaneous exhibition across the river in Gatineau, including some of the vanquished from last night who will be seeking revenge. Then, on Saturday afternoon back at the RA Centre, Mr Shirov will review the games from the simuls.
On Monday, Mr Shirov heads to the Toronto for another simul organized by Ted Winick of the Annex Chess Club.
Wow. That's an impressive result for Shirov despite a few of the cities best players not participating. But that result from Saeid is amazing! I wonder what colors he had for his games?
I wish I hadn't been so busy lately because I would love a rematch against Shirov after taking a draw in a superior position the last time. Thanks for all your work in getting Shirov here again. I think we should start a tradition of buying Gord a bottle of wine as a thank-you every time Shirov comes to town. This should barely begin to replace his wine cellar after having the grandmaster in his home for a week lol.

GM Shirov followed his Ottawa and Gatineau simuls with a lecture on Saturday in which he reviewed 12 of the games ffrom the simul. It proved a very successful and informative session. A full report will be posted by John Upper on OttawaRAChess.com. In several games, notably against Marinkovic and Doubleday, Shirov entered the ending in a losing position only to pull it out and win. In a number of games, the evaluation by the computer engines (Houdini, Deep Rybka) were proved wrong. In my game, for example, through 40 moves it found that White (I) was equal or better when in fact the very best I could hope for with best play was a draw as all the initiative (poorly judged by the engines) lay with Shirov as Black. Needless to say, I did not play "best moves" and was crushed.:D
A highly successful visit.

I heard that the crowd was enthusiastic and very appreciative...Brad Thomson of CMA was there representing us...and he enjoyed himself...but I agree with you...posting results here would be a plus.

I'm glad the throbbing crowd of 20 people had fun. Thanks Zeromskis for your slightly rude post. I'm quite impressed with Shirov's results this time around. I would also like to know the strengths of the players he faced. For the record some of us have jobs and fit bodies and don't spend our entire day in front of a computer screen scouring chess websites, snacking and making slightly rude posts. I was making what I thought was a valid observation comparing Shirov's trip to Ottawa this time compared to other times. Like I mentioned before ( and Zeromskis and Larry didn't ) I appreciate the work of Gord and for that matter John Upper and others who helped with organizing these events. I feel that this is an appropriate bulletin board for posting and accessing Canadian chess content and events. If that's not the case why do people go on chesstalk again?? Oh yeah, to make slightly rude comments from the safety of their computers.

Although Egidijus can likely fend for himself, for what little it is worth, my first reaction to your post was that it was quite provocative and bordering on rude as well. Sometimes that is on the computer monitor of the reader (and may be influenced by many things).
People put rather considerable effort into arranging and organizing very interesting events (usually for no compensation other than the satisfaction of doing so) and then other people criticize the lack of instantaneous feedback.
LOL! That one is kinda funny. I love chesstalk, what a great place to perfect my trolling skills. Kerry, laziness is not a quality a volunteer should have, neither should they complain about how they aren't getting paid. That's why you don't hear any complaints from the volunteers themselves, just retired old men with too much time on their hands! See you in another 5 years PC thugs of chesstalk!
