Approximately what strengths are white and black in this game below (in CMA ratings)? I need a gauge of how badly I play nowadays. Thanks in advance!

I gauge with my son (cfc 11xx, cma ~5xx ) - he does not make these kind of mistakes so early :p Thus, both players were <800cfc, cma 300 :D

Is there really such a difference between CFC and CMA ratings? Usually, CMA rating is a bit higher than FQE rating...

Anyway, I agree with the estimated strength. However, it is hard to judge a player's strength on a single game, especially if we don't know the time control.

Hey. This was an informal game. They were playing at about 15 seconds / move on average. I'm not sure if this changes your opinion.

yes, at least in Victoria. Never mind the difference between junior CFC ratings and their actual strength - even more.

some examples (CMA, CFC, Victoria CC rating)

          Name CMA CFC VCC
          Rowan James 619 UNR 1291
          Matthew Geng 1003 1199 1439
          Ray [ruining] Wu 1059 1668 2051
          Jill Ding 1035 1377 1560

This is some awful awful chess... words cannot describe the pain and suffering that I just witnessed reading through the first 10 moves of this game.

Jesse - thanks for posting this game. I have played it over several times this morning. It is interesting when you try and understand the reasons behind their moves. Obviously both players have had some instruction, as you don't see moves like 1.a4 and 1.h4, or 1...a5 and 1..h5. Both are fighting for the centre early. But then both players drop pieces early which is commonplace for beginners. Unfortunately, white seems to get paralyed by the pin on d2 and is reduced to moving his queen back and forth.

It is very hazardous to assign a rating based on one game, but what the hell.
I would say white is between 250-350, and black is 300-400 (Mississauga Junior ratings). I believe the Mississauga junior ratings are approximately equal to the CFC ratings, but I don't have any data yet to support my claim. As for how that translates into CMA ratings, I don't know yet.

@ Bindi: I was cringing too...

@ Bob: I don't think you will get much by understanding these moves as this is a very bad computer playing my own very bad chess ai. (My computer had black)

Ah, that explains it. Some of the moves did seem unnatural, even for a very very weak player. I suspected at times that this was a contrived game.
