This promises to be a memorable Canadian Junior, worth following on a daily basis. I wonder if this will be the start of a new trend or just a ray of sunshine amidst a chronically cloudy sky. In any case, bravo! CMA.

I have one thing to say. Amazing. Actually the word "Amazing" is not strong enough. SIMPLY INCREDIBLE.

      WOW.

Fantastic initiative, CMA! Great to see the Canadian Junior recapture its former glory.

Very good, Larry. A first-class event. I see that there are no mandatory regional inclusions, but I hope that the new selection rules allow for true contenders from outside Central Canada.

The old-time Canadian Juniors were December 26-31, that is 9 games in 6 days. I realize that time controls are a bit faster these days, but you're going to have ten tired puppies by the end of your five-day event. Air travel on Xmas Day is relatively open and relaxed, in my experience.

Not to say I have a problem with CMA doing this (I'm a big fan of the national championships going back to the round robin format!), but taking a national championship, limiting the field, and then giving the organizer carte blanche to select 40% of the field doesn't sound like a good idea for the CFC.

Are there any caveats/restrictions/guidelines on the 4 players selected by CMA?

I hope not. The best guarantee of success is the organizer (CMA)'s desire to put on a good show. So they won't choose a 1600 player from Pointe-aux-Piques just because he's the best player in that area, but they might choose a 2150 from Skalbania because to choose a 2157 would mean a seventh entry from Onomatopoea. I'm just guessing, of course. But--this is not a one-knight stand!

Hey Larry, are you ever going to organize some kind of futurity event if this one turns out to be successful?

During a Governors' discussion I created a table for potential 20 candidates based on their rating (keep in mind it is ~1.5month old)

I assumed that only born >=1993 are eligible. This must be confirmed by somebody, as the 2012 Canadian Junior Championship was in Calgary. This thread is named 2012-13. Thus the next year will be a true 2013 Championship :D

It's sad that GM Kovalyov will have never played in a Canadian Junior, although he won three times the Quebec Junior Championship (with a first prize between 1000$ and 1500$). Also, where is Nikita Kraiouchkine, who managed to get a very good rating without getting much bonus points? :)

The new list at http://www.chess.ca/players?player_search_age=20 Though it is U20 for this year. IMHO, the new championship should take the next year list.

My lord, that's an impressive list of junior players. You can talk all you want about rating inflation, but these are strong players. #17, for example, is B.C. (adult) Closed Co-Champion. My blood still boils when I see bonus points mentioned. The CFC governors were informed from the very beginning that the new bonus point system was flawed. Canada was not ready to have a young player the calibre of GM Kovalyov, that's another tragedy. But look at those juniors! Would any of us who contended for the ancient times Junior Championships #1 or #2 even have qualified to play for #42 (the Answer...) in 2012-13? Winners in tabular form.
