  • 2012 Calgary International Chess Classic

The 2012 Calgary International Chess Classic will take place at the Ramada Inn, downtown Calgary. The dates are May 15-21.

Our website is now up and we are accepting registrations. Complete tournament details can be found here:

    http://www.calgaryinternationalchessclassic.com/

The International section will be a 9 round swiss over 7 days and play will be at a first class hotel in downtown Calgary. This is a major improvement over previous years and should make for better chess. Watch the website over the next few weeks for other developments. GM and IM norms will be possible this year so if you are a norm hunter, contact me regarding a spot in the International section. Email: tonyficzere@gmail.com

The Reserve section will take place in the same hotel from May 19-21. The playing conditions will be excellent, all equipment will be supplied.

We have landed several sponsors so far. As announced previously, Calgary Arts Development has stepped up as a major sponsor for both this year and next year. This grant has allowed us to move the venue to a major downtown hotel and expand the tournament over 7 days as opposed to 5 days.

There will be a variety of side events (simuls, lectures, etc.) and we will announce these as we sign more featured players. The playing site is located in the heart of downtown Calgary and is just a block off the C-train line, giving players convenient access to the city. We have negotiated special rates for players. Click on the following link for details:

The first deadline for early registration is March 31. Enter early to save money and to guarantee your spot so you don't miss out on what will be an outstanding chess experience.

I hope to see many new faces at the International this year!

        Hi Tony,

Congrats on putting on a great event!

As we have discussed in the past...hopefully you can move this event down the road...off the Canadian Chess Challenge (CCC) weekend...you don't take a lot of players away from our event...but every province needs their best players in order to score!

Imagine if Alberta actually won the CCC...

          Hi Larry,

We are hoping that it will be a great event as have been the last 4. As you are aware, 2013 will also be over the Victoria Day weekend as that is a done deal. However, we will be reviewing dates for 2014.

Seeking Canadian IMs for the Calgary International

We are looking for some Canadian IMs to play in this years Calgary International. This is a great opportunity for our IMs to compete for a GM norm. As you know, these opportunities are few and far between here in Canada with only a handful of events that can provide the required competition.

For Canadian IMs, we can offer free entry, plus accommodation to the first 4 Canadian IMs from outside of Alberta. The accommodations could be at the hotel, or a billet friendly home. There is an additional opportunity for these 4 players to make a little extra cash on the side by providing either a simul, tandem simul or lecture.

If you are a Canadian IM and are interested in playing, please contact me by email at tonyficzere@gmail.com. The sooner you act, the cheaper your flight (if required) will be for you.
