Re: Mississauga CYCC Qualifier - May 20th

Tournament flyer is attached, see flyer for additional details.

Please pass the word on. I will be circulating this flyer via email to organizers in the area. Please post any questions either here or by email to rgillanders@cogeco.ca

We circulated a signup sheet for the first time last week at the club and got 12 kids registered. We expect additional registration each week. But we are really looking forward to kids outside of the club to join the festivities. I am anxious to see how our kids do against the world, and give some credibility to our club rating system.

Oops, apparently our new flyer exceeds capacity.
So, I will paste it into the next post.

I personally would hate G/25 and required to record the moves. Good thing I'm not a kid, eh?

          Hi Bob G:

Great to see the qualifier is going to be CFC " Quick rated "! The new system suits a lot of junior chess.

True, but most of the kids use about 5 milliseconds to decide on their move, so that leaves plenty of time to record it ...

Without recording moves a chess tournament is not a chess tournament. It is just kid's stuff.

There is a great chess book that was written..."Every chessplayer was once a Beginner"

Yes Kasparov, you and me...In the case of Kasparov...that phase was probably extremely short...in your case it was probably a little longer...and in my case it probably took over a year...and maybe more LOL :)

But we all go through the learning curve...the 4 move checkmate...and heaven forbid...learning that one can mate in 2 moves from the start of the game with silly play...I lost a bet on this when I was in High School...yes High School..unthinkable!

Yes so the first step is to actually get up the courage to take chess lessons...play in a tournament...and then we go from there...

Jean, when I was in the former Soviet Union I went to a Pioneer Palace where they had groups of 6 students. 5 year olds were writing down their moves and playing with a clock...I understand that...I am on your side and I respect your talent not only as a chess player but without a doubt an excellent coach for the devoted student...so now we have to move this to the North American reality...we have had some incredible people in the CMA program over the years...many became Masters...and then they took on positions in the real world where they earn 6 figure salaries...respected as incredible minds...anywhere in the World!

In many cases they want their kids to learn chess as they feel it was a positive part of their life...I see them or their parents connect with me...I am proud of what they have accomplished...and touched that they remember their experience with us.

I must admit that I am very proud of what we at the Chess'n Math Association have done over the last (soon) 27 years.

                Could we have done more...absolutely!

Are we working hard to do it better...every single day!

Do we have more to do...YES!

As far as writing down moves this is an easy enough thing to do, even in North America. It is up to people like you to implement it consistently so that it becomes natural and inseparable from competitive chess for kids. Do not wait for parents and kids who don't know any better to massively ask for it. Won't happen. It is up to organizers and responsible people to implement it without looking back, knowing that it is the thing to do to really help kids get the full benefits of learning chess. Every time I explain this to parents they seem to understand easily.
It still makes my heart bleed when I see so much time and money spend on events where keeping score is not required. In so doing the kids go back home empty handed (chesswise). One of the main ingredients to chess improvement is looking back at our games and our mistakes. With no gamescores this is not possible.

If a person is serious about chess, (s)he develops memory to a state to remember played games for a long period of time (even more - opponents opening too) That is quite easy for an empty kid's head :D
