  • 2012 Grand Pacific Open - Thank you to GM Nakamura, WGM Maisuradze, and Organizers

Thank you to the Grand Pacific Open Organizers, Brian Raymer, Paul Leblanc, Roger Patterson, and Chief Arbiter Mark Dutton, I.A., for putting on another yet another outstanding GPO.

I spoke with many first-timers and they were impressed with the venue (the 5 stars Hotel Grand Pacific located right downtown in Victoria, BC just across from the Legislative Assembly of BC), the equipment (double-weighted sets + clocks on each board and Monroi broadcast of top 2 boards), etc.

It was such a special treat for all players, young and old, to see GM Hikaru Nakamura in action -- live and in person! It was also great to see WGM Nino Maisuradze from France return to defend her 2011 GPO Championship title. It was "standing room" only during the 5th round watching the two GMs battled it out for first place!

Thank you Hikaru and Nino for coming to British Columbia! You have made the 2012 GPO a memorable event for us all.

Some photos can be found at the 2012 CYCC Facebook page:

Hikaru has attracted a lot of comments but I want to point out that WGM Nino was no pushover either, as I found out in Round One!

Thanks for the kind words Victoria -- and congratulations to all of the winners including your son, Joshua Doknjas, who finished clear first in the Under 1800 section!

It was great to have such excellent players as Super Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura and WGM Nino Maisuradze participate and be so gracious with their time in helping younger players grow their games.

We look forward to July when the best coast will be buzzing with the CYCC in Surrey followed by the Canadian Open right back here at the beautiful Grand Pacific Hotel here in Victoria. :D
