General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Recently I was paid $100 to be part of a group that discussed social media and the interaction with companies...the meal after this 2 hour interaction was great :).
I have always admitted to being techno deficient...but I have no problem going to where the action is :)
Hmmm...maybe I should create a poll...and I will do that...I guess the questions are...are you on twitter...facebook and...whatever...I have never heard of?
I am on facebook...but I rarely go there...not on twitter...go to Chesstalk regularly though :)...however I must admit when I am on vacation...I have no problem ignoring all these sites :)
I got on facebook and twitter as part of my duties at my last employment gig. I have increased my use of facebook and totally ignored twitter since leaving that position.
I cannot believe Chess and Math has no Facebook etc presence..
Time to update the website perhaps?
Yikes
Hi Mike,
We have a minor Facebook presence...I update it about 4 times a year :(...as for the website...I get proposals from folks every week...with big dollar signs...the CFC just spent $18,000 (I may be wrong on this $$ amount) to update their site...honestly...I would rather give that money to our programs...but I understand that we have to get with the new reality...I simply want a punch for the buck...
There are a lot of people out there today who put up a "PRO" sign...and are sad on delivery!
Try a student in the ITP program at Champlain College (Longueil I think), where I went. $500-$1000 should do it. $18,000 is out of the question.
Most important is content...need to hook in a few parents and organizers to take pics for you at tournaments. And schools of their their chess programs.
For Facebook, try WGM Melissa Greef's sister Nicole. They just arrived in Toronto. Melissa just played in Capelle and Nicole is a Facebook pro.
I like the designs of the ACA and Chessbase. Very news heavy to keep readers coming back.
The main thinking point(s) will be the menu design. Back when the CFC did the initial makeover(by Mr Vail), I was one of the people to review the design and give feedback. It was clear that the presentation/artwork/color scheme was in good hands but in terms of meeting user needs/business objectives some revising needed to be done.
Going back by memory, I idenitified
1. The main user groups(and respective needs)
2. The main business objectives of the CFC
Once this step is taken the design is relatively straightforward.
More ideas later..Its 630am here. I have a tournament starting today.

You need something new every day. For somebody who isn't motivated in that direction, it's the hardest thing. IMO, design is less important. Though some will pillory me for saying it.
Incidentally, Knut Neven did an attractive job for the Calgary International website, I think.

I spent some time on a Facebook page for our Ottawa operation. I did receive a few positive comments, but these were outweighed by parents who did not want their children's pictures displayed. So I deleted the page.
Just note that CFC has been on FB and Twitter ( with some help from Dave at the time we were getting going ) for a while now, and CFC posts something new every 2nd or 3rd day. We have over 100 " Likes " on our page, and they get our posts in their " News Feed " automatically whenever we post. As Dave notes, it is a worthwhile resource to use - we also have many " Likes " who are not CFC members, but are part of the casual chess playing public, including internet players.

The FQE also created a Facebook and a Twitter account last summer. It has been a useful way to reach more people and to advertize the tournaments. Of course, it doesn't do any miracle, but with about 200 followers, it's not that bad :)
