  • Clock simul against GM Kovalyov

8 players from Team-Quebec saw their efforts rewarded by a spot for a simul against GM Kovalyov. He will be facing 8 players, with clocks, at the Olympic Stadium on June 23 (the simul starts at 10 AM). He will then analyze the best games with the kids.
The following players were invited (although the list might change) :

    Olivier-Kenta Chiku-Ratté (2196)
    Tristan Côté-Lalumière (1866 - to confirm)
    Nicholas Johnson (1725 -to confirm)
    Sheng-Ming Gu (1649)
    William Yip (1561)
    Hou Han Zhang (1393)
    Muhan Luo (1369)
    Ananda Saha (1325)

I would also like to congratulate those who got the best grades at the last test :

    Tests week 7-8 :
    Group 1:
    1. Chang Yun (3 points)
    2. Olivier-Kenta Chiku-Ratté (2 points)
    3. Oscar Sprumont (1 point)

    Group 2 :
    1. William Yip (3 points)
    2. Nicholas Johnson and Benjamin Sun (2 points)

    Group 3 :
    1. Ananda Saha (3 points)
    2. Muhan Luo (2 points)
    3. Mattew Yip (1 point)

Some parts of this test will be available in the next Echec+ magazine.

Almost the same as to write with boards :p

    What time control?

Mine shortest was 2 min vs 5 min against two players. That was a sport with two hands :D

Well, not all simuls are done with clocks :)
The time control will be of 75 minutes + 15 seconds for Kovalyov, and 60 minutes + 15 seconds for the participants.

There are advantages and disadvantages for the players and the exhibitor in clock simuls. Both players and exhibitor can make their moves at any time - the exhibitor can move in any board order (of those on which his clock is running), and a player can make a move while the exhibitor is on another board - making it a bit of a challenge fir the exhibitor to try to find the last move in a complex position.

Congratulations to GM Kovalyov, who scored 6,5/7. Only Olivier-Kenta Chiku-Ratté was able to obtain a draw. His game, quite interesting, should be analysed in the next Echec+ magazine, along with an article on the whole day.

          The participants were :

          Olivier-Kenta Chiku-Ratté (2196)
          Nicholas Johnson (1725)
          William Yip (1561)
          Muhan Luo (1369)
          Ananda Saha (1325)
          Mattew Yip (1323)
          Maïli-Jade Ouellet (1254)

The simul in itself was quite fast ; in 90 minutes, Kovalyov had made resign his last opponent. As you can notice in the games, his play was simple yet very effective.

An analysis of the games by the grandmaster followed. GM Kovalyov analyzed briefly every game, and then stopped on some interesting positions. To conclude, he gave the participants two challenging problems and a couple of advices. The kids learned easy ways to mate with bishop and knight, as well as to draw with a rook against a rook and a bishop.

The participants got out quite satisfied at the end of the day, having not only played against the highest FIDE-rated player in Canada, but having also discovered an amazing positional analyst.

          * You will find the games as an attachement.

Only 7 of the 9 players listed played. What happened to Zhang and Gu?

Oops. Sorry, wrong list. Hou Han had to cancel the day before the simul, and was replaced by Maïli-Jade. Sadly, Sheng-Ming didn't show up, as he forgot...
