      Location of BBQ changed

Our original site for the BBQ has been torn up for construction by the city and consequently, it has been moved. The new location is at the Laurel Inn Park which is a bit closer than the previous location and on the waterfront and is an easy walk from the hotel. Not suitable for soccer or volleyball (unless you don't mind losing a few balls in the ocean). All other details are the same as before. Times, etc.

See http://victoriajuniorchess.pbworks.c...n%20Open%20BBQ for a map and other details.

Re: Canadian Open Victoria July 8-13 Registration rate goes up $20 after June 29

I have now registered for this tournament. Upon seeing that Jack "The Barbarian" Yoos is also playing, I have been working on some tactics recently. Should I play him, I can now avoid any shenanigans and steer the game towards a friendly draw, as the fans want to see.

The whale tours from Victoria fequently cross the border as well. It is one of the few ways you can enter the United States without a passport! Shhhhh don't tell Homeland Security.

A recent flight I took from Toronto to Vancouver was in US airspace for close to 90% of its route.

I think it needs to be noted that this "instance" of the COCC is by far one of the weakest. This may be because it takes place in a rather inconvenient travel spot for many Canadians and perhaps a little further to travel for Europeans, or because the schedule was shortened to more than 1 game/day (I know that's the main reason I'm not playing). However...

So far, I see chesstalk crowded with talk about Hikaru's presence, the high number of entrants, the BBQ festivities, the tourist spots, and the weather...

I feel like the tournament has lost a lot of its competitive edge and is being compensated by making it a family event. It's starting to feel more like a CYCC than a COCC to me. The 2007 Canadian Open in Ottawa featured some of the most notable and numerous (22) GMs to date, while this Canadian Open boasts just THREE (3) GMs. I think the top section has deteriorated and the organizers needed to make a bigger push in this regard.

I think it's labelled a bit deceiving, but the top section has just 16 titled players once you realize that NM isn't actually a recognized FIDE title.

Not to take anything away from the actual functionality and location, which I'm sure will be stellar, but this is supposed to be one of Canada's strongest and biggest tournaments, and has set strong precedents in the past. 3 GM's and the 10th ranked seed being <2400 rated is in my eyes the making of a weak event. The top section should be the most important to an organizer, and I think its been gravely overlooked for BBQ's and weather forecasts.

                          I wholeheartedly agree with this.

With only 135 players registered and 3 GM's, this event is comparable to a big weekend tournament in Toronto such as the Toronto Labour Day Open.

Traditionally, the Canadian Open was a one game per day event but that is not the case anymore. It use to be the only one of its kind in North America.

The Canadian Open is suppose to be one of Canada's most strongest tournaments, but it seems to have deteriorated.

The US Open always has been a one-section event, and one game a day (although there are 4-day and 6-day options - all merge for the last 3 games). Why not the Canadian Open? (and keep it to a maximum of one day with two games - like the Quebec Open)

Mark's list clearly shows that the largest Canadian Opens have been in Montreal and Toronto (with Edmonton and Ottawa close behind). Smaller cities may put up a good prize fund - but that doesn't always attract the players (I won $400 fairly easily in the 59-player Edmunston, NB event in 1990).

Many players don't care how many GM's there are in a Canadian Open (or any event) - the foreign GM's are only taking away prize money that a Canadian might have won.

On the contrary, the more GM's there are, the more players it attracts. It makes the tournament atmosphere more exciting to be around. The top section of a tournament should always be the organizer's main focus, as the top section is what attracts other players.
